Bold drop game one of west final to Badgers

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The TMU Bold fell 3-1 on Thursday evening in game one of the OUA West final. Daniil Grigorev was the lone goal scorer for the Bold. The OUA West final pits the Badgers against the Bold, who split their season series at one game apiece. The two sides also finished first and second in the OUA west standings, respectively. Game two of the series goes Saturday from the MAC.

It was a bit of a shaky start for the Bold, who allowed the first goal of the game just over five minutes in following sustained pressure and several chances from the Badgers.  After the opening goal, the physicality would quickly ramp up on both sides, as the teams looked to set the tone for the best-of-three series. Each stoppage in play was met with extra curricular pushing and shoving. The physicality limited chances on both sides for the remainder of the frame.

In contrast, the second period sped by, as very few whistles interrupted play. As a result the game opened up, allowing for back and forth opportunities for both sides. Neither team was able to take advantage of the quickened pace during the opening half of the second, despite a prolonged period of 4-on-4 and power play opportunities for both squads that yielded high danger chances.

The Bold would eventually break through just before the period's end, as Artem Duda found Grigorev in front for a deflection to level the score at one all. It came with just under four minutes to go in a period where the Bold saw two 'no-goal' calls go their way against the Badgers. Brock seemed primed to double their lead throughout the middle stanza, but the stellar play of Kai Edmonds kept the Bold within one until they found the equalizer.

However, just 1:48 into the third, Brock would restore their one goal lead, coming via an odd-man rush opportunity. Despite allowing the go ahead goal just minutes into the third, the Bold remained composed, and had the majority of chances through the period. Their best shot at equalizing came when Duda drew a tripping call with just five minutes to go. The resulting power play was disappointing, as they were unable to establish continued offensive zone pressure and did not register a shot. The Bold's comeback hopes would end with 47 seconds remaining, as Brock iced the game with an empty net goal.

Puck-drop for game two is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. on Saturday as the Bold look to extend the series. TMU students get in free with their OneCard.
