Portokalis' Winner Helps Bold Pull Out Gutsy Win at Brock

THOROLD, Ont. – It wasn't always pretty and it took nearly the entire 60 minutes, but the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team gutted out a 3-2 win over the Brock Badgers on Friday night. With the win, the Bold moved to 4-5, an impressive early season turnaround after starting 0-3. TMU currently sits in fourth place in the OUA East as the season's seventh week gets started.

The Badgers struck first, just over 30 seconds into the contest, with a point shot tipped past Kai Edmonds. Edmonds, who entered with a sub-.900 save percentage, was sharp the rest of the way, stopping 23 of 25 shots faced. Despite conceding early the Bold would regain their composure, eventually equalizing on a Daniil Grigorev powerplay marker. The Bold entered tonight just 8-for-48 on the powerplay this season, with Grigorev's goal being his second on special teams this season.

The two teams remained deadlocked until midway through the second, when the Bold took two penalties on the same play, setting up a two-minute 5-on-3. The Bold, who entered as the most penalized team in the OUA, conceded just 18 seconds into the two man-deficit. TMU escaped without further damage, allowing captain Chris Playfair to equalize just two minutes later. Playfair found the loose puck on a scramble in the Brock blue paint for his second of the season. In the dying stages of the period a Spencer Shugrue block on the penalty kill kept the score even at two.

As the teams entered the third, the atmosphere felt like overtime. The Bold earned a power play halfway through the period, but were unable to generate much more than dangerous looks against the Badgers. The Bold would get one final time on the powerplay in regulation, with just over two minutes to play. William Portokalis played hero, sniping an Ian Martin feed above the Badgers goaltender with 44 seconds left, lifting the Bold to victory.

The Bold are back in action tomorrow afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on the road against the Guelph Gryphons. Catch select road games streaming on OUA.tv.
