TORONTO – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team were back on home ice on Saturday to face the Western Mustangs. For the Bold, it was a rematch of their 3-0 loss in London earlier this month, but this time the Bold came out on top with a 4-1 win.
To start,
Gaby Gareau netted the opening goal for the Bold and her second of the season.Â
"Scoring early in the first was a good feeling, it got the energy going on the bench and I think from there it kick-started the momentum and we got back-to-back goals really quickly there," said Gareau.Â
Halfway through the first,
Ahalya Julien-Medeiros fired the puck into the back of the Mustang's net, making it a 2-0 lead.Â
The Bold had a 5 on 3 powerplay in the final two minutes of the first, and they were quick to take advantage.Â
Eden Dusome picked up a rebound and netted the third for the Bold going into the first intermission.
Head Coach
Lisa Haley spoke about the difference in facing the Mustangs last week and now.
"We wanted to make sure we came out and had a strong first period. And I think at that point, having a three-goal lead in the first, that's the way we wanted the game to unfold, and it did. So it's just a matter of trying to stay consistent after that," said Haley.
Heading into the second period, the Bold hoped to maintain their lead.Â
Alexia Stratos felt the pressure to hold off the Mustangs, and made a total of 33 saves.
"It's so special. I didn't play much last year, so this has been amazing to have this opportunity, and I'm just gonna keep running with it," said Stratos.
Stratos recorded a shutout in TMU's previous game, against No. 7 Guelph on Wednesday. Once again, she had a strong performance and her defense helped put up a wall in front of her.Â
With five minutes to go in the second period, Lauren McEachan shot through traffic and scored her first goal of the season.Â
With 20 minutes left, the Bold were up by four and the Mustangs had difficulty keeping the puck in possession.
A penalty by the Bold gave the Mustangs their first goal of the game.
The Bold fought until the end and finished the game with a 4-1 win over the Mustangs.Â
TMU will be back on the ice on Nov. 29 to take on the Waterloo Warriors. Admission is free for all TMU students with their OneCard.
