TORONTO – The No. 9 ranked Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball team delivered an electric comeback win against the Windsor Lancers on Satuday afternoon, coming back from a 20-point halftime deficit.
TMU's
Catrina Garvey produced a stellar game with 28 points and played a crucial role in the team's comeback.
Reflecting on Gravey's game, Coach
Carly Clarke said, "She's struggled to make shots the last few games but we have full trust and confidence in her. She shot the right ones today and she also got to the rim. Few assists, zero turnovers. I was just really happy to see some shots go in for her and I think the team fed off that too."
Garvey shared her excitement regarding her shooting performance and the teams' shot execution, "Oh my gosh amazing, there's like no other way to put it, we've been having that as like a main focus for us now and getting those reps in practice."
The Lancers were dominant in the first quarter, claiming the lead early. The Bold pushed to catch up but Windsor was performing well outside of the arc, shooting 50 percent in the first half. The first quarter finished 30-15 for Windsor.
In the second quarter the Bold worked to lock down Windsor, not allowing as many shot opportunities.
Haley Fedick brought the energy and began dropping threes, going 3 for 4 for the game.Â
Fedick was also happy her shots were dropping, "I think it feels really good! My teammates honestly found me super well so I think those were the right shots for me and I expect to make those ones."
Fedick generated a solid performance not only offensively but defensively with 17 points and eight rebounds. Â
"I think defense is my main focus when I'm out there, like that fuels offense for me," said Fedick.
The Bold worked to try and close the gap and finished the first half down 47-27.
Garvey started the third hot dropping back-to-back threes. The team fed off of that energy, wanting to change the trajectory of the game.
Coming back from injury, TMU's
Callie Wright had an impressive return game. She produced five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and five points, having well-rounded play.
Wright was eager to get back on the court, "It feels great, I mean it was really hard watching on the sidelines and just watching the team battle and I couldn't really help. Coming back I felt like there was a lot of support."
Chipping away at the score, TMU ended the third quarter with a ten point deficit, 63-53.
In the fourth quarter, the Bold were determined to take the lead. They started off strong with both Garvey and Fedick continuing to perform.Â
Keeping their composure on defense and keeping their offensive momentum, the Bold cut down the deficit.
Hailey Franco-DeRyck had good defensive efforts, digging for rebounds. She ended the game culminating eight rebounds.Â
With 5:57 remaining in the game, Garvey made a beautiful three to take the lead. TMU continued to build off this lead.
Kaillie Hall drove to the rim and ended the game with 15 points. All of the Bold's efforts paid off and they took the win, 80-71.
Happy with the team's improvements, Coach Clark said, "We were really specific about some looks we wanted to try and find and I thought the team did a really good job at executing that. The ball moved, it felt like we found open people today which was great to see."
Reflecting on the win, Fedick said,"It feels great, as a vet it's always nice to lead our team to these big wins. Windsor's not an easy team, they've been fighting and they've been killing teams lately, so I think to get this win at home is really special for us."
TMU will look to keep this momentum going when they hit the road once again and face off against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo, Ont. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22. Catch all the action on OUA.tv
