WATERLOO Ont.— The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball team defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 68-58 on Friday night. TMU's Catrina Garvey scored 14 points to help the Bold secure the win.
The Bold and the Golden Hawks went head-to-head at the start of the first, fighting for the lead.Â
Unable to drop shots and match the Golden Hawks early energy, the Bold fell behind. With under three minutes remaining Laurier pulled ahead, and claimed the first quarter, 20-16.Â
Looking to make up for missed shots in the first quarter, the Bold were eager to strike back in the second. Going on a 13-point run, the Bold were able to claim the lead and create some space.Â
Kaillie Hall played a crucial role in the first half by setting up shots. Hall ended the game with an impressive eight assists, seven of which were executed in the first half.Â
Hall not only set up shots but scored some of her own. She did a good job drawing fouls, allowing her to shoot from the line. Hall got 11 points and went 11-for-12 from the free-throw line.
TMU additionally locked down on defense, only allowing Laurier to get single-digit points in the second. The Bold finished the first half with the lead, 39-29.
Sustaining their momentum, TMU remained determined in the third quarter. Garvey was consistent from beyond the arc shooting 50 per cent.Â
Hailey Franco-DeRyck attacked the rim, contributing with both layups and rebounds. She finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, providing an all-around effort.
By the end of the third quarter, the Bold were up by 15, 56-41.
Trying to keep their composure, the Bold continued to trust in their shot in the fourth quarter. Scoring efforts came from all across the team, with the Bold focused on ball movement to generate open shots.
Callie Wright found space under the net and used it to her advantage tonight. With good looks from teammates and creating opportunities under the basket, Wright totaled nine points.
The Bold defeated the Golden Hawks with a comfortable ten-point margin, 68-58.
Taking this win back to Toronto, the Bold will look to keep this energy going when they host the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, Nov. 23. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
