TORONTO – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team fell short in an overtime battle against the University of Windsor Lancers, 3-2.
Despite the loss, the Bold produced a solid shooting effort almost doubling the Lancers, with 40 shots on goal.
Both teams brought energy in the first period. The Bold were eager to get a shot early on, taking advantage of their shooting opportunities.Â
Finally capitalizing off their shot attempts, first-year
Spencer Shugrue scored his first OUA goal off a rebound at 12:53.
"Obviously it feels good to get a goal, especially at home but it's a tough loss and that's kind of dwelling on me," said Shugrue reflecting on his goal.
Feeding off the momentum, TMU's
Connor Bowie scored two minutes later, putting the Bold up 2-0.
Looking to keep themselves in the game, Windsor scored with less than two minutes left in the first, making it a 2-1 game.
Down by one after the first, Windsor was looking for a chance in the second. TMU Goalie
Kai Edmonds worked hard to lock the net, with the Lancers fighting to tie the game.Â
At 6:57, Windsor executed one of their chances, tying the game, 2-2.
Wanting to claim the lead once again, the Bold pushed hard offensively. TMU took every shot they could, amassing 12 shots on goal in the second frame.Â
Presented with two power play opportunities late in the second, TMU couldn't take advantage of them. The second period ended with the score 2-2.
In the third period, both teams were determined to seize control of the game. TMU had several good looks but the shots did not go in.
The Bold were presented with two additional power plays but couldn't convert and the third period ended with the score at 2-2.Â
In overtime, Edmonds was superb, making several key saves. Unfortunately, the Bold's final push fell short, and the Lancers snuck in a goal, winning the game 3-2.
Reflecting on Edmonds' efforts, Coach
Johnny Duco said, "He was solid, I know that last one he'd like to have back. Otherwise he's been really sharp the last three or four games and he's looked great in practice. He's looking like the goalie that we all know he can be."Â
The Bold won't have much time to reevaluate as they will look to defend their home ice once again this weekend. TMU will return to the ice to battle the UQTR Patriotes on Saturday, Nov. 16.
"A huge test tomorrow against one of the best teams in the country, so something for us to get up for and hopefully play our best game of the year tomorrow," said Coach Duco.
Puck drop is set for 6:15 p.m. TMU students receive free admission to all home games with their OneCard.Â
