Breen, Davis shine in Bold's drubbing over Lions

The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team opened up the new year in high spirits on Saturday, scoring goals in all three periods to rout the York Lions 4-1.

TMU's Megan Breen and Cailey Davis combined for the opening two goals in Saturday's contest to power the Bold to victory.

"I think that after a while when you're playing with someone, you just start to know where they are. We kind of know each others game and how we play," said Breen about her on-ice chemistry with Davis.

The blueliner finished the afternoon with a pair of goals and an assist to cap off her first multi-point outing of the season, as well as her first career multi-goal game in TMU's drubbing over the Lions.

Goaltender Shannon Harris made 26 of 27 saves in the win, picking up her second-straight victory over the Lions this season.

Head Coach of the Bold Lisa Haley praised the work ethic of her players in the multi-goal win and compared the implications surrounding Saturday's contest to that of a playoff game.

"[Heading in] We knew how important this game was and we knew how important it was to get as many points as possible," said Haley shortly after the win.

"I'm excited to see what our team has in store for the second half," added Breen - who was awarded the 'Golden Helmet' following the game for her industrious performance.

Breen opened up the scoring for the Bold with 5:27 remaining in the opening period, cashing in on her first tally of the campaign from York's blueline to put her side up 1-0 on the visitors.

Her goal would come just minutes after the Bold upset the Lions on the powerplay, killing off three penalties, including a two-player advantage in York's favour, to snatch some momentum in their first period back from winter break.

"It was definitely an energizer for our group, it felt that game went the way we needed it to go from there," Haley said.

Cailey Davis, who portrayed the role of the playmaker on TMU's first goal of the game, shifted her talents to the scoring side of the act in the early stages of the second.

Roaming the rim of the Lions' crease, Davis scooped a loose puck into the back of an empty cage to double the Bold's lead 4:26 into the middle frame. The goal marked Davis' second tally of the season, with her first of the campaign coincidentally coming against the Lions as well.

Following the game, Davis mentioned that both her parents attended York University in the past. The third-year believes the extra history gives her an edge when matching up with the Lions and has felt that way over her last two seasons in the OUA.

"I feel so much more oomph when I play [York]," said Davis.

Breen -  who picked up an assist and her second point of the afternoon on Davis' 2-0 marker - found the back of the net later on in the period to claim her second goal against the Lions and bring TMU's lead to three.

Payton Kerr added the fourth and final tally to the scoreboard for the Bold in the early stages of the third to reestablish the three-goal lead in which the Lions cut into late in the second.

On the heels of their dominant win, the Bold turn their sights on the next pair of home games to help barrel their way up the OUA East standings.

The group sits in last place with a chance at moving up the table coming Sunday afternoon against the Waterloo Warriors. Puckdrop from the MAC is set for 2:15 p.m.
