Game Recap: Hockey (W) | | Mario Russo

Inspiring performance not enough for a Bold win against the Warriors

A trio of late unanswered goals powered the Waterloo Warriors past the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team on Sunday, taking the afternoon affair by a 5-2 score less than 24-hours after the Bold's crucial win against the York Lions on Saturday.

TMU held their own through the opening two periods of play against the second-ranked team in the OUA East, finding an equalizer midway through the middle period to erase an early two-goal deficit.

Waterloo's Carly Orth and Leah Herrfort combined for goals in both the first and third period respectively to help lead the visitors to victory on Sunday, playing a lively part in breaking the 2-2 tie throughout the final frame.

"Any time your heading into the third tied against a team like Waterloo, you feel like your're in a good position," said Head Coach of the Bold Lisa Haley following the game.

"Any little missed opportunities, [Waterloo] is going to make you pay," she added.

The Bold got themselves behind the eight ball just thirty seconds into their contest with the Warriors on Sunday. Orth lit the lamp for the visitors on the game's first shot, sweeping the ice in celebration of her side's swift start.

Herrfort doubled the Warriors lead 14:27 into the first period, picking the top-left corner of the Bold cage for her team-leading seventh goal of the campaign.

Herrfort - who recorded an assist in Waterloo's 3-0 victory over TMU in December - has been a trending talent for the Warriors throughout the first half of the season, putting up 16 points through 15 games played this season.

TMU cut into Waterloo's lead prior to the end of the opening frame and through a combination of prime positioning and a speedy release from their captain Emily Baxter

Cradling the puck from behind the Warriors' cage, TMU's Gaby Gareau neatly found the tape of Baxter before the latter rifled her team-leading ninth goal of the season past Waterloo's netminder.

"The release that she had on her shot today is just a great example of the work [Baxter] has put into it," praised Haley of her team captain. "I thought she absolutely buried that oppurtunity," Haley added.

Sunday's first-period goal marked the end of a three-game point drought for Baxter as well. The fourth-year forward has yet to go pointless in four-consecutive games this season, one of the few members of the Bold to do so and a testament to the consistency throughout her game.

"Any time we need some sort of motivation or spark, [Baxter] is there to give us a lift," mentioned the Bold's bench boss, believing that the preparation leading up to games is what makes 'Baxter' a common name on the scoresheet.

TMU's Brooke Michaud followed the likes of her teammates' first-period tally's with one of her own 12:46 into the second frame, bringing the contest back to level terms with her third goal of the campaign.

After over forty minutes of tight hockey with one of the league's best, the Bold's strong effort would come to a quick and abrupt halt throughout the third period.

Like she did on the first play of the game, Orth broke the deadlock once more to put the Warriors back into the lead. Herrfort would add her second of the game in the late stages of the third, while Keiara Raitt landed the fifth and final blow to the Bold 50 seconds later.

Despite the outcome favouring the opposition on Sunday, Baxter was pleased with the fight her side took to the Warriors through the opening two periods of play.

"We definitely showed some resiliency fighting back there. [Waterloo] is a good team and to be tied 2-2 heading into the third is pretty good," said the Bold captain following the loss.

TMU will look to replicate something of a complete game - like they did this past Saturday in a 4-1 win against York - when hosting the Queens Gaels next Friday.

Puckdrop from the MAC is set for 6:00 p.m.
