Bold fall in tight contest with Stingers

TORONTO - The TMU Bold men's hockey team entered Friday's contest coming off an exciting win against the Brock Badgers and were hoping to bring even more energy to the ice tonight, facing the Concordia Stingers in the regular season for the first time since 2018.

Since the new year, the Bold have attempted a new lineup of 11 forwards and 7 defence, hoping to see some change in results.

"We wanted to get Duda in the lineup and didn't feel that any of our defence deserved to come out," said Duco.

Artem Duda, the Arizona Coyotes 2nd round pick, made his way to the ice for his second game, slowly getting used to his new team.

It didn't take long for these two teams to heat up, as soon as the puck was dropped, the Bold went back and forth with the Stingers fighting for possession.

Zach Roberts, back on the ice for his second game in as many nights after returning from injury, was a physical threat on the ice.

Since both teams were coming off big wins, it was a race to see who could put more pucks towards the net and score first.

The Stingers had no trouble speeding down the ice but struggled to get it past the Bold defence.

The Bold fought hard in the first but fell short in shots on goal with only eight compared to the Stingers' 16.

The Bold started the second period on the power kill, but they did not back down, keeping the puck mainly in the middle of the ice.

They wasted no time and rushed to the net every chance they could, but the Stingers put up a few dangerous shots that goaltender Kai Edmonds was quick to shut it down.

Edmonds made a total of 35 saves throughout the night.

Evan Brand on the defence played a big role in keeping the puck away from the Bold net, using long passes to send it up the ice to his teammates.

After the Stingers' chances, the Bold quickly reset and hoped to get the puck past the opposing goalie, but it was not easy and the frustration started to show.

In the last five minutes of the second period, a tripping penalty gave the Bold their first power play of the night. The power play unit struggled to find a clear shooting lane as the Stingers buckled up on defence.

"I'm really disappointed in how our power play looked these last two days so that's certainly something we're going to look at," said Duco.

Tensions were raised at the end of the period following a big hit by defenceman Joe Rupoli but both teams left the ice after another scoreless period.

The Bold jumped right in and took control of the puck in the third period. Cole Cameron managed to steal the puck away and took a shot, sending the puck into the net. It was Cameron's second goal of the season, opening the scoring for this tense game.

"For me as a defenceman who doesn't score very much, I just want to contribute," said Cameron.

The third period went on, and the Bold went back on the penalty kill, trying to stop the Stingers, but a shot from the blue line just slipped past Edmonds, tying up the score 1-1.

Both teams were desperate to take the lead with only six minutes to go when the Bold receive their second power play of the night, but a shorthanded goal by the Stingers was the difference in this one.

With minutes left in regulation, the teams racked up penalties, making it difficult for the Bold to tie up the score.

The Bold left the ice after a 2-1 loss but a hard-fought match. TMU now prepares to face Windsor next Friday.
