Special teams trump Bold in school-day loss to Badgers

The Brock Badgers rallied off three unanswered goals in the third period of Friday's School-Day contest to secure a 4-2 comeback win over the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team.

Randyll Strongman catapulted the Badgers into their first and only lead of the contest with a pair of goals in under seven minutes to stun TMU in the third.

Ella Krushelnicki added her first of the season with an empty-net tally to seal the deal on her team's win, as well as extend the Bold's losing ways to six games.

"Before we could get ourselves back together, [Brock] knocked us down again and took the lead," said Head Coach of the Bold Lisa Haley following the loss.

Coming off consecutive losses to the University of Toronto, the Bold looked nothing like a team that lost five-straight games heading into Friday's opening period.

Generating chances of both quantity and quality, TMU found the back of Brock's net 6:29 into the first frame to take the game's early edge.

A swift wrist shot from the stick of Megan Breen rocketed over the shoulder of Brock's Kenzie Harmison in goal to give the Bold a one-goal lead.

The third-year defender has been red hot since returning from the winter break in early January and has thrived - particularly at home - on the offensive side of the puck, scoring four goals in the Bold's first five home games of the semester.

"I think [Breen's] confidence has grown a bit here in the winter semester and we are reaping the benefits of that," mentioned Haley, who has witnessed the play of her defender peak in recent weeks.

The Bold had an opportunity to double their lead over the Badgers in the late goings of Friday's second period with an elongated four-minute powerplay.

Unable to get organized, a turnover by the Bold in the neutral zone sprung the Badgers towards a dangerous shorthanded chance on the Bold's side of centre ice. Parking herself directly in front of TMU's Shannon Harris, Brock's Kaedyn Gomes knocked a loose puck between the legs of the Bold netminder to level up the score.

Haley credited the unsuccessful powerplay to the abundance of poor decisions by her group, specifically when choosing to change lines.
"Usually it's supposed to be something that generates momentum for you and it felt like it sucked some out of us during that sequence," added Haley.

Both teams traded powerplay goals in the third period to once again bring Friday's contest back to a standstill. TMU's Gaby Gareau and Brock's Strongman found the back of the net for their respective sides, with the former snapping a twelve-game goalless drought in the process.

Less than four minutes later, the Bold were chasing the Badgers on the scoreboard for the first time in the game, with Strongman potting her second tally  of the afternoon to secure everything but victory for the visitors.

The Bold will look to rebound from their defeat to the Badgers on Sunday in a home matchup with the Windsor Lancers.

Puck Drop for Sunday's contest is set for 2:15 p.m.
