Lancers come out on top in penalty filled contest

TORONTO - The TMU Bold women's hockey team hit the ice on a cool Sunday afternoon for a game against the Windsor Lancers.

The Bold have had a few close games in the past few weeks but couldn't finish things. Today the Bold came to the ice prepared for a difficult and physical match.

Captain Emily Baxter and the team were ready for a big game following their match against Brock on Friday.

"We wanted to start the game off pretty strong. We're not in a playoff spot right now so these were big points we needed to get," said Baxter.

Both teams had some good chances by the net, but the tight goaltending on both ends was a big help early on.

The Bold experienced their first penalty kill of the day, which has been a focus for this team all season long.

With many clearings and a tight defensive core around the net, the Bold quickly killed off the penalty.

Lauren Griffin was put to the test today, constantly stopping flying pucks, but through traffic, the Lancers opened the scoring.

Both teams played an aggressive game racking up the penalties. During a Bold power play, with six minutes left in the first, Baxter scored for the Bold to tie the game, making this her 12th of the season. Cailey Davis and Tori Butler pick up assists on the goal.

The Bold returned to the ice in the second period hoping to break the tie.

The Bold went up and down the ice trying to open more scoring chances, but the Lancers fought hard and outdid the Bold in shots on goal.

Griffin lost their stick during a battle in front of the net but managed to make the biggest save of the game.

"Griffin is definitely good at making timely saves for us, but also they have to make routine saves too," said head coach Lisa Haley.

Both teams relied on the goaltending to keep this an even game, but the Bold constantly found themselves on the penalty kill.

"I was asking the referees for a little bit of guidance, it felt like our players were starting to feel frustrated," said Haley on the penalties.

Before the second period ended, after a tough five-on-three scenario, the Lancers scored their second goal.

Into the third, the Bold tried to keep the puck in the Lancers zone, but the penalties were detrimental to their game, giving the Lancers a two-goal lead.

The Bold attacked hard in the third but struggled to keep the Lancers from crowding the net and they eventually scored their fourth goal.

The Lancers scored half of their goals during the power plays, which was the main reason the Bold fell behind.

The Bold are back on the ice next weekend for a doubleheader against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks starting Friday morning in Oshawa.
