Bold host annual DIFD game, fall to Blues

TORONTO - The TMU Bold women's hockey team was back on the ice on Saturday afternoon to complete their double-header weekend against Toronto after a loss to the Varsity Blues last night.

The Bold were dressed in purple today for the annual Do It For Daron campaign game. The stands filled as families and fans came to support the campaign by participating in raffles and games.

"We know how much work goes into trying to host this event every year and our alumni, our families, recognize it as well," said head coach Lisa Haley about the DIFD initiative.

After a tough game against the Blues on Friday, the Bold were pressured to leave with a different outcome.

"When we came back to the rink last night, we had a good discussion about what today could look like if we had the right approach," said Haley.

The first period was intense for the Bold, sending the puck deep into the Blues' zone and opening scoring chances.

During the game's first power play, the Bold laid on the pressure, and Megan Breen took advantage and a quick shot landed the puck in the back of the net.

The Blues followed up to tie this game up, making this a busy period going back and forth.

Last night, the Bold struggled to control pucks coming at them, but today, they were more aggressive in their zone any time the Blues came on the attack.

Both teams headed to the change room with a tie and the Central York Panthers U10 took to the ice for a fun intermission matchup.

"Everyone bought in, and unfortunately a few plays, we wish we could have taken back but that's the game of hockey," said Haley.

Into the second period, both teams were fighting to break the tie, and that came with many penalties going both ways.

First-year Neely Van Volsen has had a successful few games with the Bold, totaling seven points after recording another assist today.

Leaving the second period with a 2-1 lead for the Blues, the Bold had some work to do to catch up.

Captain Emily Baxter received a pass and slipped it into the net, recording her 11th goal of the regular season.

Shannon Harris, who played in the net today, recorded 36 saves and spoke on her team's support. "They never think it the goalie's fault, it's always a good job on the saves made," said Harris.

The Blues followed up with another goal, and it was down to the wire for the Bold.

In the end, the Blues came out on top with a final score of 4-2, but the Bold played a strong game, and it was a successful event for DIFD.
