Game Recap: Basketball (W) | | Jay Greyvenstein

Bold unable to bounce back with loss to Guelph

GUELPH, Ont. - It was a disappointing performance on Saturday night as the Bold women's basketball team struggled offensively in a 60-36 loss at the hands of the Guelph Gryphons. With the loss, the Bold (12-4) fall into a tie for the lead with Brock the OUA Central. Offensively the Bold were led by Haley Fedick with eight points and five rebounds.

The first quarter was one defined by scoring streaks for both sides. The Bold found themselves ahead 7-0 early, keeping Guelph scoreless through the first half of the opening quarter. However, the Gryphons would respond with a seven-point run of their own. TMU would finish the quarter with a 17-4 run, with Haley Fedick recording eight first quarter points to help the Bold pull away.

The Bold, who were outrebounded 49-33 by the Queen's Gaels last night had a much better performance on the glass tonight through the first quarter. However, turnovers plagued the Bold through the early parts of the second stanza, with Guelph cutting the TMU lead to two just four minutes in. The Bold did not score a point until 2:21 remaining in the half, allowing Guelph to go on a 19 point run, claiming a 26-24 lead. Jayme Foreman ended the drought with a floater, leveling the score. Jessica Keripe would restore the Bold lead, one they'd carry into the break, on a tough take to push the score to 30-27.

Guelph would quickly bring things back to level after the break, and then the game slowed to a grind. The teams traded offensive fouls on multiple trips down the floor, and failed to generate quality looks as the quarter drew on. The Gryphons would eventually begin to take advantage of their trips to the free throw line, going 11-for-13 from the charity stripe through the first three quarters. As a result the Gryphons carried a 46-33 lead into the final frame.

Looking to avoid their fourth loss through five games in 2024, the Bold needed a big response after scoring just ten points in the previous twenty minutes of game time. The Bold entered the final quarter shooting just 12-for-38, a drastic drop-off from their usual 37.4% shooting percentage. Unfortunately for the Bold, the Gryphons would shoot the lights out in the final ten minutes. Hitting threes early in the quarter quickly diminished TMU's comeback chances. The Bold would not hit a field goal in the final quarter, and in a flash, the Gryphons had established a 24 point lead, allowing them to bleed clock and seal a statement victory over the previously ranked Bold.

The squad is back in action next Friday in Sault Ste. Marie to take on the 2-10 Algoma Thunderbirds.
