SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - The TMU Bold women's basketball team snapped their three game losing skid in a big way on Friday, defeating Algoma 81-40 on the road.
Five players scored in double figures as the Bold offence got back on track - this was the first time in 2024 that the squad registered more than 60 points in a game.
Hailey Franco-DeRyck had a big game, scoring 11 points and picking up 13 rebounds as she now sits second in conference rebounding. Fellow first-year
Alex Pino scored a career-high 13 points in the win.
The game started on even terms, tied at 19-19 after the opening ten minutes, but a 22-3 second quarter for the Bold opened the spread and TMU was in control from there. TMU's highest scoring quarter came in the third to help put the game out of reach, then the Bold finished strong by limiting the Thunderbirds to just five points in the fourth to wrap the game at 81-40.
Friday was the team's lone game of the week, as the Bold now turn their focus to their February 2 and 3 matchups against Nipissing and Laurentian, respectively. Friday's game will feature a Black History Month celebration, while Saturday's contest is the team's annual Shoot for the Cure game.
