Bold get back in win column against Guelph

GUELPH, Ont. - The TMU men's basketball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday night, winning 80-76 over Guelph on the road. The win comes a night after the Bold fell in a tough loss to Queen's in a top 10 matchup. It also helps ensure the Bold will remain in second place in the OUA central, behind the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The teams kept pace early through the contest's opening stages. The Bold, who struggled offensively for stretches last night, kept pace with a Guelph offence ranked seventh in the OUA. The Gryphons did the majority of their scoring in the first quarter down low, benefiting from a strong first quarter rebounding performance, out rebounding the Bold 12-7 in the first quarter. Guelph would hold a 23-20 lead after the first ten minutes of action.

The second quarter saw several turnovers by the Bold help the Gryphons grow their lead. The Bold were also hampered by poor shooting, starting the quarter just 1-for-7 on field goal attempts. As a result, the Guelph lead stretched to seven, at 34-27, halfway through the second frame. After a TMU timeout, Bijon Sidhu would hit a big three to bring the score within two before Aaron Rhooms leveled the game at 35 the Bold's next trip down the court. The Gryphons would then begin a 6-0 run that ultimately allowed Guelph to bring a 41-38 lead into the break.

Both teams began the third quarter with shooting slumps. The Gryphons began to slowly reestablish their lead behind an aggressive half-court press. Traveling calls slowed the Bold offensive momentum as they handed multiple possessions to Guelph.

Back-to-back Cameron Ramage threes would quickly bring the Bold back to level however, as on their next trip down the Bold recaptured their first lead since the opening quarter courtesy of Aaron Rhooms. It would shift the tide of the contest, as Guelph began committing self-inflicted mistakes that helped the Bold recapture the control they had in the contest's beginning. The Bold would outscore the Gryphons 22-16 in the quarter, grabbing a 60-57 lead as the teams entered the final frame.

The Bold would maintain their lead throughout the first half of the fourth quarter. Throughout the night the Bold defended the perimeter well, with Guelph shooting just 4-for-35 from beyond the arc. Comparatively the Bold shot 10-for-26 from three point range, perhaps none bigger than a Gabriel Gutsmore triple that extended the Bold's lead to eight. The Gryphons would stay in the game partially as a result of their impressive free throw shooting, finishing a perfect 14-for-14 on the night.

Holding an eight point lead with two minutes remaining, the Bold would face a daunting Gryphons press that generated two turnovers. They quickly cut the deficit to four with 1:40 remaining. Guelph would then hit a three pointer with just 40 seconds remaining, cutting the lead to one. Gutsmore and Ramage free-throws would again push the Bold lead to three, setting up a final Guelph possession to decide the game. On the game's final possession a Gryphons' miscommunication would gift the Bold the ball, and an 80-76 TMU victory.

The Bold return to action next week against Algoma on the road.
