Gaels top Bold in battle of nation's best

TORONTO - The TMU Bold women's basketball team fell 75-54 on Friday night to the No. 4 ranked Queen's Gaels. It was Winter Homecoming for the 12-3 Bold, who still sit atop the OUA Central division following the loss. The Bold were led offensively by Jayme Foreman who scored 19 points in the defeat.

"It was really fun and exciting," Foreman said of the Winter Homecoming crowd. "Definitely a different atmosphere."

TMU found themselves down early, struggling to connect passes. As a result, they were scoreless through the first half of the opening quarter. The slow start resulted in a 12-2 deficit at the five minute mark of the quarter. The Gaels would stretch their lead to 24-11 before the quarter's end.

Entering today's contest the Gaels (12-2), boasted the OUA's second best offence, averaging 78.9 points per game, as well as the OUA's top defence. Queen's work in the post and on the boards provided challenges for TMU defenders.

"I think you try to adjust to who you're playing in some ways," said head coach Carly Clarke on the game plan entering tonight. "But you can't stop everything."

The second quarter began better for the Bold, who found more of a groove offensively. Kaillie Hall invigorated a near capacity MAC audience with impressive shooting from deep and tough takes. However, rebounding continued to spell problems for the Bold, as Queen's second chance opportunities helped them keep pace with the Bold's increase in offensive efficiency.

"(Queen's offensive rebounding) was certainly a big factor for sure. They're one of the top teams in the country," said Clarke. "But I think there was a lot of different pieces."

Coming out of the break trailing 36-23, the Bold initially struggled to carry over the offensive momentum they had ended the first half with. Missed connections on passes gave the Gaels the ball back, as the Bold scored points on just one of their first six trips down the court.

The Bold would eventually find their groove offensively in the third quarter as the physicality ramped up. A Catrina Garvey three, and Jessica Keripe and-one helped chip away at a deficit that had swelled to twenty-one. Stringing consecutive defensive stops together helped the Bold cut the Gaels' lead to 15, however, turnovers early into offensive possessions allowed for Queen's to finish the quarter up 58-35.

With the result all but final as both sides entered the fourth quarter, the Bold still battled. Hailey Franco-DeRyck had a big block down low, representative of the fight shown by TMU as the clock wound down. Despite continuing to play with effort, the Gaels side was simply too strong. Queen's continued its efficient work in the post and on the glass, extending their lead. Kaillie Hall would take over in the fourth quarter, dominating in the offensive half. Her 16 points on the night helped cut the margin of defeat to 21, with a 75-54 final score.

The Bold are back in action Saturday night against Guelph, against the 10-5 Gryphons.
