No. 3 Gaels top No. 8 Bold in top ten clash

TORONTO - The TMU Bold were the better team for three quarters, but a dominant third quarter by Queen's was the difference, as the Gaels captured an 82-73 victory on Friday night.  Queen's is now 11-3, while the Bold still sit atop the OUA central division despite the loss. Leading the way for the Bold offensively was Aaron Rhooms, with 17 points.

Entering today's matchup, the Bold and Gaels ranked third and fourth, respectively, in points per game. The two sides would live up to their reputations beginning the first quarter at a rapid pace. Possessions were quick, and fast break opportunities plentiful as the teams tried to match each score. And for the most part they did, as after 10 minutes of play the Bold held a slight 22-21 advantage.

"We shot the ball really well in the first half," said head coach, David DeAveiro, of the high scoring opening to the contest. "I knew we couldn't keep shooting like that, their defence is really good."

The second continued the pace of the first, albeit with more sound defending. The teams continued running down the court, but scoring was at a premium in the early stages. Things would change following a timeout, after which the sides would trade threes on four consecutive trips down the floor. The teams were incredibly evenly matched throughout the first half, with seemingly each three, turnover and layup matched immediately by the other side. Just before half an Aaron Rhooms triple gave the Bold their largest lead since the early first quarter, before a Julian Walker lay up sealed a 49-43 lead heading into the half.

Coming out of the break, points were once again hard to come by in the early stages. Queen's managed to secure a lead after eight consecutive points to begin the third quarter. A Marsei Caston three would represent the Bold's first points of the half, but from there the Bold offence showed minimal signs of life. The Gaels would continue their efficient offensive start to the half, as they slowly grew their lead to double digits as the end of the quarter drew near. They'd finish the quarter with a 69-57 lead, an eighteen point swing in the scoreline.

"Bit of both," when DeAveiro was asked whether Queen's dominant third was self-inflicted or due to the Gaels' performance. "They're good, they run their stuff, they seek out matchups and who they want to attack. They follow the plan, and that's one of the things we're trying to work on."

As the Bold entered the final frame they looked determined. Defensively they forced Queen's to take bad shots, and offensively seemed more focused. The Bold cut the lead to eight just two minutes into the quarter. The Queen's lead would be just three two minutes after that as the Bold quickly climbed their way back. The Bold run reignited a near capacity crowd that was silent just minutes before. The Gaels would respond, however, restoring an eight point lead on a contentious goaltending call. The Gaels would carry that lead to the end, securing the 82-73 victory.

The Bold are back in action Saturday night against Guelph.
