TMU hang seven goals to cool off hot Laurier side

15 players recorded a point in the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team's  7-1 dismissal of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday, the former scoring six unanswered goals en route to their blowout win.

Three of the Bold's seven tallies came on the powerplay as the red-hot man-advantage helped guide the Bold to a second-straight victory on Thursday night.

It was TMU's first win over Laurier since 2020.

"It was about time that we showed [Laurier] what we're made of and we showed them on the scoresheet tonight," mentioned Joe Rupoli - a third year defender who came into Thursday's matchup with the Golden Hawks winless against the Waterloo side throughout his OUA career.

"I thought that was one of our best full 60 minutes of the year," said head coach of the Bold Johnny Duco following the win.

"Really happy to get that win against a team we struggled with over the years," he added.

TMU's Daniil Grigorev kicked off the goal parade on Thursday evening with his eighth of the season just 65 seconds into the first period.

The Bold have beaten their opposition to the punch in each of their five games since returning from the winter break. William Portokalis added his second goals in as many games to the Bold's side of the ledger in the late stages of the opening frame, catapulting the home side back into the lead after surrendering a tying goal to the Golden Hawks midway through the first.

From that point forward, TMU dominated their opposition on both ends of the puck and found their tenacity in the attacking zone to match up with their success on the scoreboard.

Chris Playfair opened the floodgates for the Bold 2:16 into the second period with his third goal of the season and snapping a twelve-game goalless drought in the process. The Bold captain scored his last goal in late October during his side's 6-3 victory over the RMC Paladins.

"I didn't know he was on that big of a drought because he does so many good things," mentioned Duco.

Rupoli picked up a 10-minute misconduct shortly after the Bold doubled their lead in the second period, dropping the gloves with Laurier's Caleb Petrie as emotions started to rise around centre ice.

The Bold came out of the rare altercation energized and found the back of the Golden Hawks' net an additional four times to help dismiss the visitors.

Aaron Hyman and Connor Bowie added back-to-back powerplay goals just 39 seconds apart from each other to put Thursday's contest well out of reach.

Both of TMU's goals came on the same two-man advantage and sucked all of the emotion from the visitor's bench.

Rupoli, who picked up a fight earlier in the contest, put the Bold five goals clear of Laurier midway through the third period with a slap shot for his second of the year, while Ian Martin added TMU's seventh goal of the night to cap off an explosive offensive showing heading into the weekend.

"We're really deep right now and I think that showed tonight. I thought we were the deeper, fitter, faster, more prepared team and luckily the score showed it," said Duco.

The Bold will look for a third-straight victory on Saturday when they take on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. Puck drop from Oshawa is set for 7:00 p.m.
