Bold fall short against East division leader Gaels

KINGSTON, Ont. - The TMU Bold women's soccer team took on the Queen's Gaels for the first time this season, after a tense game against the Varsity Blues last week. The Gaels entered the game on a five game win-streak but in an effort to take the lead straight away, the Bold took the reigns.

The Bold turned up the heat quickly and circled the Gaels in their zone, passing through tight spaces and attacking.

Goalkeeper Elisa Paolucci was quick to stop any goal-scoring chances from the Gaels and helped the Bold recover in their zone, and she stayed consistent in the beginning, but the Gaels pushed back. Defender Vanessa Pianta stayed on the attackers from the Gaels, stopping them from getting through.

After a collision with Paolucci, the Gaels were given a penalty kick and managed to slip the ball into the bottom corner, giving them the first goal of the game.

Possession in the first half began equally and two back-to-back beautiful saves by Paolucci gave the Bold another fighting chance. But after, it only took a few rushes from the Gaels which was just enough to get two more goals in.

A lot of offsides were called against Queen's, as TMU kept their defence tight and closed in on the ball to regain possession. Many attempts were made by the Bold to slow down the Gaels but they were unsuccessful, and the Gaels were up by three at the end of the first half.

At the beginning of the second half, a couple of changes were made in the lineup, including Abby Harrison who stood in net. The Bold picked up the pace and kept the pressure on, but the possession still leaned towards the Gaels.

The rapid Gaels' forwards made quick turnovers along the wings turning into the fourth and fifth goals for the Gaels.

In final efforts to get a goal, the Bold played out the last few minutes strong but ultimately the Gaels came out on top winning 5-0.

The TMU Bold will have a chance to bounce back Sunday at 1 p.m. against the RMC Paladins to finish off their weekend road trip.
