Bold offence snakebitten in loss to Queen's

KINGSTON, Ont. - It was a frustrating loss for the TMU Bold men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Kingston, where they dominated in shots, corners and opportunities but ultimately fell to the Queen's Gaels by a score of 3-0, pushing their record to 2-3-0 on the year.

Despite early opportunities, the Bold would face a deficit for the first time this season after conceding a 13th minute goal on a Queen's fastbreak chance. It was the first goal the Bold allowed this season, as they entered the contest boasting the nation's top defensive unit. It was a difficult result for the Bold, as they dominated the early stages of the match earning multiple set pieces in the Gaels' half prior to conceding.

Following the goal, the Bold continued their offensive pressure as they looked for the equalizer. Colin Gander, recently named TMU's athlete of the week, continued his strong run of play helping stretch the field from his defensive left back position and putting the Queen's defence on its heels.

The Bold's offensive attack was once again led by Chris Campoli and Justin Santos. Entering today's match Campoli had found the scoresheet in each of the Bold's prior games, and he continued his torrid start to the season with multiple chances at goal. Santos, meanwhile, led the Bold with two shots on goal, and continually found openings in the Gaels defence.

Despite the offensive effort Queen's would stretch their lead, with a broken passing play in the 37th minute leading to a shot that barely snuck under goalkeeper Dante Ferraro's arm. A first half red card given to a Queen's midfielder would bolster TMU's comeback chances as they entered the halftime break with a man advantage, but a 2-0 deficit on the scoreboard.

Coming out of the second half TMU continued to dictate the pace, but were snakebitten with each opportunity. Multiple posts were hit by the Bold, with rebounds ricocheting out of bounds and 50-50 balls failing to fall the Bold's way.

Queen's would score for a 3rd time in the 51st minute cleaning up a rebound off the TMU post. It would be the only shot Queen's would generate in the half.

The tough bounces would not slow the Bold resolve though, as they continued to look for a breakthrough. They would earn a golden opportunity to get on the board with a 58th minute penalty won by Campoli. The attempt, taken by Santos, would be stopped with an excellent save by the Queen's keeper, and the rebound attempt from Mauro Lulli was met with an equally fantastic stop. Despite the Bold's best efforts the score remained 3-0 as time remaining quickly dwindled. Queen's remained content to play defensively, and blocked the onslaught of shots that TMU took in the second half as they ultimately hung on for the victory.

The team is back in action on Sunday, taking on RMC before returning home to Downsview next weekend.
