Campoli goal lifts Bold to battle of Toronto victory

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University Bold men's soccer team won their second game of the season against the Toronto Varsity Blues at Downsview Park on September 16.

The Bold, who are currently ranked No. 9 in the country, put up a clean sheet win against the Varsity Blues, making it their second unconceeded win this season.

"I can point to anyone on the bench or I think I can close my eyes when I pick a starting lineup because we have so many quality players," said head coach FIlip Prostran.

Pressure was piling on in the first half but the Bold's defence was strong with third-year Tristan Marshall building a blockade against the Varsity Blues.

The two teams continued the fight to find the back of the net when in the 19th minute, Varsity Blues player Michael Maslanka received a yellow card.

Bold goalkeeper Dante Ferraro was able to keep the Varsity Blues at bay, saving back to back shots.

"You just got to stay patient, stay on your feet, be ready, and go with whatever you've got," said Ferraro after the game.

Neither team was able to open up the scoring in the first half, resulting in a half-time locker room talk for the Bold.

"The whole locker room speech, the whole momentum of winning, the whole environment was boosted, and then we came here and we've got to come out here with a win. We stepped it up and then we got the three points," added Ferraro.

In the 56th minute, a yellow card was issued to the Varsity Blues bench followed by another yellow given to Bold forward Luca Di Marco. Another yellow card was given to Varsity Blues player Toby Richardson in the 59th minute.

Downsview was engulfed in cheers when midfielder Chris Campoli scored the first goal of the game in the 62nd minute.

The team headed to celebrate the goal with last season's captain, Christian Westlaken, who was in attendance.

"Christian I feel is part of the coaching staff. He's an alumni that's contributed so much to the team. I consider him more a friend than an ex-player," said Prostran.

As Downsview got darker, another save from Ferraro put a pin in the Varsity Blues' attempts to tie the score.

With five minutes left in the game and desperate for a tie, a free kick awarded to the Varsity Blues was saved by Ferraro, making it his sixth save of the game.

"Dante's an unsung hero for this team...Dante's the guy that's just been hanging out in the shadows making big save after big save and doing his job. I think it's the sign of a great goalkeeper when he goes unnoticed," said Prostran.

As the final whistle blew, the Bold were able to claim the Subway Series title against the neighbouring Varsity Blues. The final score was 1-0 for the Bold.

The team has yet to allow an opponent to concede a goal against them.

"We haven't conceded a goal all year yet. Right from the back line [and] the goalkeeper, they're obviously a key. You don't get scored on you don't lose games. They've obviously been our backbone," said Campoli.

The team hits the road to face the Queen's Gaels in Kingston on September 23 with kickoff set for 3:15 p.m.
