Bold cruise into quarter-final with win over Western

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball squad took care of business in their first round matchup with the Western Mustangs, beating the visitors by a compelling 69-46 score line.

Rachel Farwell and Jayme Foreman overhauled the offensive workload for the home side, combining for over half of TMU's points in the opening-round win. Veteran Eve Uwayesu came just short of her first triple-double in a Bold uniform and helped the group put their offensive game into gear.

"It really works having two shooters that teams have to worry about," said Foreman following the win.

The Bold caught fire in the early stages of their opening postseason matchup of 2023, with offensive production stemming from six different outlets dressed in blue and gold. Among the half dozen, Foreman emerged as the leading target throughout the initial quarter, watching seven of her points fall while scooping a trio of defensive rebounds.

"She's a great shooter…she knows how to find her space," said head coach of the Bold, Carly Clarke.

TMU found success within the Western paint during the better part of the first quarter and reaped the benefits from it during a nine-point run that closed the opening frame.

"We wanted to make sure we threw the first punch," said Clarke. "We shot the right shots…we did the right things," she added.

Although their momentous runs would be staggered throughout the middle stanza, Foreman combined with Farwell for 12 points throughout the quarter and helped the Bold engrave a twelve point lead into the scoreboard heading into half.

"[Farwell's] always there giving us energy," said Foreman, praising the value of her teammate both on and off the court.

On the opposing side of the hardwood, the Mustangs mightily struggled to find the offensive rhythm needed to throw a wrench in the Bold's plans. Their defence would face significant trouble trying to get the engine started coming out of halftime, as the Bold rang off twelve consecutive points in a matter of minutes.

During that treacherous span, Farwell matched her point total from the preceding quarter and perpetuated her side to taking a stranglehold of the match. Western worked to claw their way back during the latter stages of the frame, but failed to cut the deficit to anything manageable.

"Our defence really limited everyone else which was key," added Clarke.

With a potential comeback already seeming bleak in the minds of the visitors, the Bold stuck the dagger into the hearts of their opposition in similar fashion to their third-quarter incision that left the Mustangs stunned.

Yet another dozen points burned their way into the scoreboard and on the home side, nonetheless. Farwell and Foreman sat at the helm of the offensive production to close out an emphatic win for the blue and gold.

The Bold will look to extend their season even further when they face off with the Carleton Ravens this upcoming Saturday in the OUA quarter-final. Tip off from the nation's capital is set for 6 p.m.
