Pair of third period goals lift Bold over Lions

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team scored a pair of third period goals just 1:10 apart from each other to secure a 2-1 victory over York on Friday night.

Trailing 1-0 after 40 minutes, TMU found two quick strikes eight minutes into the third period. Emily Baxter netted her fourth of the season to tie the game, before Megan Breen potted her third of the year as the go-ahead marker.

Breen's go-ahead came with just 6:23 remaining in the third period, as she walked into a pass from the point and found twine to give the Bold their first lead of the night and one they wouldn't relinquish.

Lauren Griffin stopped 16 of the 17 shots they faced for the Bold, picking up the win after falling to the Toronto Varsity Blues last Saturday.

Dani Fox, Erika Crouse, Madison Lalonde and Cailey Davis all chipped in assists in the win, as TMU gathered their 30th point of the season and moved to 9-10-4 with just three regular season games left.

The Bold currently sit in in the fourth-and-final postseason spot in the OUA East division. They have a game in hand and are two points up on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, who kept pace iwth the Bold thanks to a 4-2 win over the Western Mustangs tonight in Oshawa. The Ridgebacks are back in action tomorrow night, as they play host to Wilfrid Laurier in the second half of their back-to-back.

Meanwhile, TMU only sits four points back of the Queen's Gaels for the third spot in the division, with the Gaels only having one game remaining in the regular-season.

Olivia Giardetti had a milestone night for the Bold, as the fifth-year forward suited up for her 100th career OUA game. Giradetti joined teammate Madison Lalonde in members of the team to accomplish the feat this season.

Giardetti and TMU will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they trek south to St. Catharines, Ont. for a battle with the Brock Badgers. Puck drop at Canada Games Park is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
