Golden Hawks blank Bold in penultimate game of 2023

WOODSTOCK, Ont. - The TMU women's hockey team opened December with a 5-0 loss at the hands of the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night. With the calendar turning over, the Bold met Laurier in Woodstock as part of a charity game with United Way Oxford. TMU looked to use the game to find its footing before the break, but the loss puts them at 2-12-0.

Despite the teams entering at opposite ends of the OUA standings, opportunities were even during the early going. Starting goalie Shannon Harris had several underrated stops early that kept the score even, with Laurier mounting pressure as the period continued. An inopportune deflection off a TMU defender would open the scoring for Laurier halfway through the first, firmly putting momentum in the Golden Hawks' hands.

Laurier would double their lead on a 2-on-1 with five minutes remaining in the opening frame, putting the Bold in a 2-0 hole as they looked to claw their way back into the contest. After a Bold penalty put Laurier on a late power play, TMU generated some of their best chances of the period, but they remained scoreless as the teams entered the break.

Opening the second on the penalty kill, the Bold would surrender their third goal of the game eight seconds in. The Bold responded with pressure, but remained unable to beat the Laurier defence and failed to generate long stretches where they dominated play.

Laurier would solve Harris again halfway through the period, stretching their lead to four and stumping the Bold attack as they looked to respond. Gaby Gareau did her best to inspire the Bold offence, but a fifth Laurier goal just over halfway through the game sank the Bold's chances at a comeback.

Entering the third, the Bold looked for a response to the Laurier onslaught through the first forty minutes. Early on they played competitively, much like the opening stages of the first where neither team had the clear advantage. Kayla Kondo and Emily Baxter both played big roles in helping generate early chances for the Bold, but they remained scoreless.

It was a better period for the Bold, who didn't allow any goals and minimized Laurier chances outside a few turnovers in prime scoring locations. A Bold power play presented their best opportunity to find the scoresheet, but TMU struggled to get shots through traffic and inside the slot as the period progressed. They had control of the puck for their longest stretches in the final frame and generated more score chances. Their third period performance is one the Bold will look to build on as the season continues into the second half.

TMU is back in action tomorrow night, against the Waterloo Warriors in Waterloo in their final game before the winter break.
