Game Recap: Basketball (M) | | Mario Russo

TMU use hot start to route McMaster

The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball squad routed the visiting McMaster Marauders on Wednesday evening in an 87-66 win that featured a 25-point first quarter and a double-double by Aaron Rhooms

David Walker led the way with 22 points and a team-leading six assists on the night. Marsei Caston continued to impress in his first season with the Bold, dropping 17 points and eight rebounds in a monstrous night for the blue and gold attack.

After suffering their first loss of the season on Saturday night to the Lakehead Thunderwolves, head coach of the Bold David DeAveiro quoted his side of being "humbled" following the 86-78 defeat at home.

The Bold landed just 13 points in the opening quarter of that loss and took exceptionally long to put their offense into any sort of forward gear. Threes failed to land until the Bold's back's were pressed against the wall in the fourth frame when a need for an attack festered in desperation.

On Wednesday, the Bold had a chance to wipe their loss clean against the Marauders and get their offense back onto an even plain. The home side did just that, and took less than five minutes of the first quarter to carve out a colossal hole for the Marauders to emerge from.

TMU soared to a quick 11-0 lead and never looked back in the game's initial stanza. Just as he was for the Bold this past weekend, Simon Chamberlain dominated the opposition's paint, shooting just under 60% from the field and landing a team-leading seven points in the opening quarter.

Mike Demangus provided the only sign of life for the Marauders in what was a dominant stretch of play for TMU. Demangus swiped 11 of McMasters' 16 points in the first quarter and would be a driving force for the visitors all night long.

Demangus added six points to his nightly total before the half but received very little support from his teammates offensively. Unable to round out their attacking game, the Marauders began to trail further into the distance of TMU as the home side continued to dominate from the field and extend their lead to 12 points at halftime.

Any sliver of hope that the Marauders hung onto in the second half was quickly smashed to bits following the continued excellence of the Bold attack. Julian and David Walker helped silence the visitors and secure victory well before the final buzzer, with the two combining for 20 points in the second half of the Bold's mammoth offensive showing.

The Bold would go on to macerate the Marauders by 19 points to clinch their second victory of the season and effectively rebound after dropping points last weekend.

The group will now turn their focus to a 3:00 p.m road tilt with the Brock Badgers on Saturday.
