Shooting woes plague Bold in loss to Badgers

TORONTO - The nationally ranked No. 6 Toronto Metropolitan University Bold men's basketball team fell to the Brock Badgers in an unfortunate ending on home court on Saturday afternoon.

"[We] didn't look like the team that should be ranked sixth nationally tonight. We've got a long way to go," said fifth-year Lincoln Rosebush.

In the opening minutes of the first quarter, the Bold lagged behind the Badgers, but were quickly able to make up for some lost points. Guard David Walker led the team in points, and a three-pointer from third-year Aaron Rhooms put the Bold in a 21-18 lead.

"I thought Aaron and David, we rely on those guys so much, but today wasn't a game where those two guys could do what they normally do because Brock was well prepared and scouted for that," said head coach David DeAveiro.

The Badgers caught up to the Bold in the beginning of the second, leading the Bold by 2 points. After a timeout charged to TMU, both teams were struggling to put points on the board, but the Bold were ready to defend home, with the bench calling for defence.

In a back and forth second quarter, the Bold trailed the Badgers 23-22 with five minutes to play in the half.

A quick steal from Rhooms and basket by forward Julian Walker brought roars from the crowd but was called for an offensive foul. Still trailing by four, the Bold knew they needed to be stronger if they wanted to walk away with the win.

The blue and gold couldn't surpass the Badgers, and ended the first half trailing 34-31.

The team grew more frustrated on the third, not being able to find a lead. The Badgers' strength was in their defence, which helped them succeed throughout the match.

"We lost the third quarter by 11, and that's the game. That's the game," added DeAveiro.

The desperation to win on home court followed the Bold into the final 10 minutes of the game.

"It just felt like a dog fight. You know, it was trading punches and through the whole game it felt like whatever team made the extensive run was probably going to win," said Rosebush.

Ultimately, it was the Badgers who came off the court victorious in Toronto. With a final score of 81-68, it wasn't the outcome the Bold wanted. Looking to improve on their strategies for the next game, the squad will take on the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Goldring Centre on Wednesday night.

"We have shooters on the team so I think that percentage will naturally go up. We've just got to keep shooting and being confident, but we can't let our confidence slip at all. I think if we keep shooting, it'll come up," said Julian Walker.
