Game Recap: Basketball (M) | | Mario Russo

David Walker leads TMU past UofT for third win of the season

David Walker's 33-point performance blew the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball squad past the University of Toronto (UofT) Varsity Blues on Wednesday night, with the visitor's securing a 96-91 win over their crosstown rivals.

Walker finished the evening just two points shy of tying his OUA career high in points, shifting his game into overdrive in the game's second half. Aaron Rhooms and Simon Chamberlain were just a rebound away from picking up respective double-doubles in the dominant win.

The Bold traded heavy blows with the Varsity Blues in a high-scoring frame to open up Wednesday's contest with their city rivals. After falling behind 9-2 in the opening minutes of the quarter, TMU swarmed back with nine unanswered points of their own to take their first lead of the match.

David Walker queued up the charge for the Bold, landing the first of his two three pointers in the half to tilt the momentum in the visitor's favour. Rhooms and Marsei Caston took exception to their side's newly-found impetus, ringing off 14 and 13 points respectively to carry TMU's lead into halftime.

Much of the Bold's success through the game's initial half came from in and around UofT's paint, with the squad cashing in on nearly 54% of their attempts from the field. Rhooms led the charge in that category and rushed the paint more often than the rest of his Bold teammates, shooting just under 78% from within the arc through two quarters of play.

Very little would change for the Bold as they worked on closing out the Varsity Blues to secure their third win of the season. Rhooms and Caston continued to cause chaos within UofT's defensive core while David Walker exploded for 13 points in the penultimate frame.

Despite opening the final quarter up 14 on the Varsity Blues, Callum Baker and Nathan Bureau registered eight and seven points respectively to try and reverse their side's fortunes before the final buzzer.

Despite coming within five points of the mark, UofT's duo would be unsuccessful in forcing an extra frame as David Walker continued to land his shots to keep the Bold on top. With the victory, TMU improves to 3-2 on the season and picks up their first win over the Varsity Blues in over a year.

The group will look to recreate another dominant showing in a rematch with UofT on Saturday. Tip off from the MAC is set for 2:00 p.m.
