Game Recap: Hockey (M) | | Mario Russo

Ian Martin's three-point game sends Bold past Lions

The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey squad snapped their two-game losing skid earlier this afternoon, besting the York Lions 5-2 to pick up a crucial pair of points.

Five members of the Bold registered multi-point games in the home victory, with forward Ian Martin leading the charge with a goal and two assists.

"Since day one of training camp [Martin] has been arguably our best forward day in and day out," said head coach of the Bold Johnny Duco following the win. "To see him get rewarded and chip in offensively was great to see," he added.

After embarking on their longest road trip of the regular season, the Bold returned home to the MAC and spent the opening twenty minutes of Saturday's matchup trading blows with the Lions on both ends of the ice.

Martin opened the scoring with an accurate deflection towards the top-right corner of York's cage to snatch the early lead. TMU forward William Portokalis delivered the first point of his sophomore season on the powerplay marker, sending a crisp slap-pass onto the tape of his well-positioned teammate to secure the game's initial edge.

Despite heading to the dressing room in a 1-1 tie, the recipe for success carried over for the Bold and Lions into the second period as well. Both teams doubled their totals on the scoreboard throughout the middle frame, with TMU once again beating York to the punch in early goings of the period.

TMU's Cole Cameron nestled a spiraling wrist-shot from well-outside the Lions' cage into the top corner to re-obtain the Bold lead. The tally marked Cameron's first goal as a member of the blue and gold family after joining the fold this past offseason.

"He's been arguably our most consistent player. [Cameron] has really been a horse for us back there," mentioned Duco.

Yet even the home side's second lead of the game would not be enough to extinguish the fighting flame burning throughout the Lions' offensive core.

The visitor's initial shot attempt of the frame snuck through the gear of goaltender Kai Edmonds and rattled around the crease as a pair of Lions hunted down the loose puck. Veteran forward Owen Gilhua arrived to the scene first and slid home his fourth of the season into the absent TMU cage to bring the contest back to level terms.

The deadlock that scorched itself into the scoreboard for much of the middle frame would welcome another digit to the Bold side of the ledger in the opening minutes of the third. In a similar area of the ice to that of Martin's initial tally, Kevin Gursoy redirected a sharp pass over the shoulder of the York netminder to secure a lead the Bold would fail to relinquish.

Portokalis and Kyle Bollers added the team's insurance markers later in the frame to put a bow on the Bold's fifth victory of the season. The group will be back in action next Friday to take on the Guelph Gryphons on the road. Puck drop is set for 7:30.
