Three consecutive goals lift Bold to win in Guelph

GUELPH, Ont. - The Toronto Metropolitan University Bold men's hockey team defeated the Guelph Gryphons in an evening skate while battling on foreign ice on Friday.

The Bold, led by head coach Johnny Duco, have been busy preparing to host the U SPORTS national championships in March. Despite their automatic qualification for the tournament, they're working on the team's form and strategy to make sure they go into the championships with a strong arm.

The team started off their game in a one-goal deficit, with the Gryphons scoring an early goal in the first period.

Getting situated on the Gryphons' ice, British Columbia native Connor Bowie struck the puck to land it in the back of the net. Bowie's goal was his second of the season, and this goal triggered the Gryphons' defence mode.

After a short break, the national's hosts were ready to pull into the lead in the second period. Forward Kevin Gursoy was able to make that happen. His goal put the Bold in a leading position, surpassing the opponents.

Minutes later and skating down the ice as fast as he could, second-year Ian Martin whizzed past the Gryphons to net a third goal against the home team. His goal came unassisted.

With a 3-1 score ending the second period, the Bold let their defence relax. The Gryphons were able to add another goal to the scoreboard when defenceman Giordano Biondi added a second.

Following the Gryphons' goal, the Bold knew it was time to step up once again to secure the win.

Forward Kyle Bollers scored the last goal of the game unassisted into an empty net, ending the Gryphons' three-game winning streak with a final score of 4-2.

The team heads home to face the Waterloo Warriors at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Saturday evening in their second game of a doubleheader weekend. Puck drop is set for 6:15 p.m.
