Bold complete weekend sweep over Thunderwolves

The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold Women's Basketball squad continued their winning ways on Saturday evening with a 75-50 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

The win completed an opening weekend sweep for the Bold, putting them at 2-0 on the young season.

Kaillie Hall was a key contributor to the Bold win, recording a team high 14 points. She began her offensive output early, recording six of the Bold's first ten points. She also orchestrated the Bold fastbreak offense, distributing the ball effectively to her teammates. Of these early benefactors was Jessica Keripe who also had six first quarter points, with the majority coming on fastbreak opportunities and tough takes to the basket.

As a result of the Bold's early offense they carried a 22-14 lead into the second.

The Bold offensive attack continued throughout the second. Early long-range makes set up dribbles and drives later, unlocking a multi-dimensional Bold offense. Catrina Garvey was particularly effective from range, helping to create looks for the forwards down low.

The Bold offense continued to thrive when Lakehead implemented a full-court press. Quick ball movement got TMU open looks that helped them grow their lead quickly in the second quarter.

As they entered the break, the Bold led 38-23 and had dominated the flow of the game. Strong defensive plays from Haley Fedick and Hailey Franco-DeRyck helped maintain the cushion built by the Bold offense.

Alex Pino's relentless on-ball defense helped limit Lakehead's open looks, holding the Thunderwolves to an impressively low 23 first half points.

Coming out of the half, the Bold remained efficient offensively. Jayme Foreman was effective at getting open looks and rebounding off the offensive glass. The Bold had success attacking the high screen to open the half.

The home side also ran a successful full-court press of their own, creating several additional offensive possessions. The game's tempo increased as a result, with the Bold effortlessly running the floor and growing their lead.

Hall continued her offensive dominance from the first half with a streak of "and-ones" that gave TMU both momentum and an increasing cushion on the scoreboard.

As the game entered its final quarter with the score long decided, the Bold remained relentless. The group distributed the ball evenly and proficiently, giving multiple players opportunities to get involved in the offense. Defensively the Bold continued to double team and suffocate the Lakehead ball carriers, allowing them to continue to run the floor.

Corryn Parker recorded a large amount of her eight points in the fourth, behind good free throws and three-point shooting.

The Bold are back in action on Wednesday, taking on the McMaster Marauders from the MAC. Coverage begins at 6 PM.
