Team defence guides Bold to season opening win over Lakehead

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University Bold women's basketball team opened up their regular season with a win against the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Friday night.

"I think we had some really great moments of ball movement, tempo was really good, and defensive position," said head coach Carly Clarke.

Clarke has been the program's head coach for over a decade. She has led the Bold victorious in lifting the Ontario University Athletics and U SPORTS championship trophies, and has coached the FIBA women's teams to earn two national championship titles.

From tip off, the Bold was quick to grab the ball and worked hard to secure as many baskets as they could.

The squad was able to secure an early lead, but knew they needed to work harder to make sure they weren't about to lose that momentum.

In her first regular season game dressed as a Bold, Catrina Garvey led the team with 16 points and five assists.

"I think we did good but I think we can do better. I personally don't think I had a good game, I know stats can say things but deep down I don't think I had a good game...we came out a little nonchalant, we want to come out more aggressive tomorrow to really just put it away in the first quarter," said Garvey.

The first quarter whizzed by, with the Bold pulling a 10-point lead over the the visiting Thunderwolves

Well into the second quarter, the Bold had a 32-19 lead on the Thunderwolves and by half, the Bold were soaring at home. The team was feeding off the bench and spectators' energy, which gave them the upper hand.

"It was kind of nice just to see everyone's family. My grandma was here, it was nice to play for everyone. It's nice to have more students out and cheering for us," said Jayme Foreman, the second-year guard.

Apart from team goals, Foreman has things to check off on her own personal to-do list as she becomes a more experienced player.

"Compared to last year. I've grown a lot in the leadership aspect and just seeing the bigger picture in things…Now I'm more level headed at seeing the bigger picture, continuing to grow in that space and continue to be the best that I can be and the best for my team," Foreman added.

Easing into the last two quarters of the game, the Thunderwolves were able to close a bit of the lead the Bold had powered on, but were unable to switch positions with the Bold on the scoreboard.

"We've been talking about behaving boldly. We want to be defensively disruptive with that, we want to be assertive on offence, and aggressive sharing the ball. Bring our bold behaviour," said Clarke.

The Bold forced 20 Lakehead turnovers, picked up 10 steals, and registered six blocks, showcasing their commitment to defence.

The team plays another game against the Thunderwolves on Saturday in this double-header weekend.

They're hoping to continue to push themselves and work towards their ultimate goals.

"We're going to come out a lot harder tomorrow. Tomorrow is just going to be us getting aggressive and doing the best that we can tomorrow," added Garvey.
