Game Recap: Basketball (W) | | Nashra Syed

Bold top Golden Hawks by eleven

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University Bold women's basketball team took on the west end Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in a mid-week evening basketball game.

This is the Bold's last conference home game of the calendar year, before they play an exhibition game against the UConn Huskies at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC) in December.

"It's super full-circle for me because I can remember going to that game when Kia Nurse was playing here so as a young girl watching that and now being able to play in a very similar environment is super exciting and obviously welcoming some of the highest level of women's basketball in the country or in the world honestly is awesome and we're really excited to do it here at the MAC and be apart of it," said fourth-year Kaillie Hall.

The Bold started off the first quarter strong on Wednesday, able to make some big plays, being cheered on by family, friends, and fans in attendance.

"[My parents] are really my support system. I love seeing their faces in the crowd, it just gives me an extra energy boost…When something goes wrong I usually look at them and go 'oops' but they just make the 'it's okay' and it makes me feel better," said first-year Hailey Franco-DeRyck.

A steal from Jayme Foreman and a bucket from Lauren Meek earned the Bold a generous lead and the squad ended the first quarter leading 20-13.

As the crew got fired up for the second, the Golden Hawks were able to close the lead when they trailed by four points. Nearing the end of the second, the Golden Hawks called a timeout. They were climbing up the scoreboard, but struggled to surpass the home team.

Inching closer and closer, the Golden Hawks wouldn't go home without a fight. This is the same team that the Bold saw in the pre-season and lost to, so there was history and an eagerness for the Bold to remain undefeated this time around.

"Well they did beat us in the pre-season so I think we were excited to see them again…We played to our values and points of emphasis," said head coach Carly Clarke.

The crowd was unhappy with some of the calls made against the Bold, but despite that, they cheered on the home team as they led by 14 points with under a minute left in the third quarter.

Hall has been on the squad for the past three years, and she's been a leader and source of inspiration for the younger players.

"I learn from them as much as they learn from me, it's a two-way street and obviously being here for a few years has been a really great experience," said Hall. "I've been really fortunate to learn from people who have come before me, like the Stefs and the Jamas of the world who are now part of our coaching staff," she added.

U SPORTS national champion winners Stefanija Mrvaljevic and Jama Bin-Edward both graduated from the Bold basketball program and have since rejoined the squad in coaching positions.

The team won by a big 11 points and is ready to take on the Waterloo Warriors and UConn in December.

"We got one more game Saturday before we really lock into [UConn] but we're really excited. It's sold out. It's going to be an awesome environment and exciting for our athletes, and our university to host a team and program like that and showcase what we're all about too," said Clarke.

The Bold, who were recently ranked No. 10 in the country, are proud of how far they've come in such little time this season, and currently remain one of only five teams across U SPORTS who are still undefeated. They're hoping to keep that record going into the new year.

"In the regular season we're trying to go 10-0 into the break, and I think that would be really good for us, it would seed us really well. We're ranked right now No. 10 in the country so that's really good for us and we're just really proud of that and we're going to go in with our heads up high," said Ottawa native Catrina Garvey.

The Bold visit the Warriors in Waterloo on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.
