Gutsmore posts season-high in home loss to Golden Hawks

Taye Donald's 25-point outing paved the way for the Wilfirid Laurier Golden Hawks' 88-81 point victory over the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball squad on Wednesday evening.

TMU's Gabriel Gutsmore rivaled the OUA's point leader In Donald all throughout his side's seven-point loss, posting a season-high 21-point performance including four rebounds and three assists.

"We haven't been able to put four quarters together," mentioned Head Coach of the Bold David DeAveiro following his team's loss to the Golden Hawks. "We allowed way too many points," added Gutsmore.

TMU's start to Wednesday's game struck a similar chord to the group's buzzer-beating defeat against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks from Saturday evening, surrendering triples from all around the outer rim of their own paint throughout the opening quarter.

The Bold's lack of coverage around the perimeter allowed the Golden Hawks to swoop In and land seven three's from four different scorers to jump into the lead. Donald was one of the several Golden Hawks to find success from beyond the arc, landing a jumping three to continue his scorching start to the campaign that has him sitting fourth in the OUA this season in successful threes made.

Shooting just under 64% from distance through the opening ten minutes of the match, the Golden Hawks' luck ran dry from beyond the arc In the second, failing to land a three and going just 1-15 from the field.

TMU's Gutsmore was one of the leading members of the Bold to capitalize on Laurier's struggles before the half and continued to show his skills later in the game as well.

Fresh off a dominant 12-point showing against the Ridgeback last weekend, the rookie powered through the paint for a pair of layups In the second quarter to turn the tide for TMU and take a halftime lead. His presence would be felt in the third quarter as well, adding four more points to his nightly total that started - and ended - a crucial eight-point run for the Bold.

Like Gutsmore, Donald also dictated the scoring for his side In the penultimate outing of the night, throwing down eight points - including a one-handed swinging dunk - to help grab some momentum for his side to build off of in the fourth.

"Playing against guys like [Donald] really shows what level you are at and how much you can get better," mentioned Gutsmore - who went toe-to-toe with Laurier's best all night long.

As the visitors charged back into the game, the Bold found themselves facing a similar struggle to that of the first quarter. Failing to limit the Golden Hawks from beyond the arc kickstarted an air raid In the opening stages of the contest and re-familiarize itself in the final minutes of Wednesday's action as well.

Laurier cashed in on four of their seven attempts from three In the fourth quarter with none being felt any greater than Donald's third triple and 25th point of the night with just over 90 seconds left in the frame.

As a result, the Golden Hawks jumped to a six point lead over the Bold and failed to look back, adding a layup and a dramatic dunk to secure their seventh victory of the season and push TMU's losing streak to two straight games.

The Bold will look to end the fall semester on a high this upcoming Saturday when they take on the Waterloo Warriors at 6:00 p.m.
