Game Recap: Basketball (M) | | Mario Russo

Bold’s winning streak comes to a close in dramatic loss to Ridgebacks

The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks snapped the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball squad's three-game winning streak on Saturday, securing a 74-72 point win over the Bold in buzzer-beating fashion.

The Ridgebacks stormed back in the final 31-seconds of Saturday's contest, with Keon Baker ringing off five-unanswered points - including a last-second layup - to strip the Bold from extending their winning ways.

TMU took their first lead of the half with just 38 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as a direct result of Michael Kayembe's dramatic three to send the MAC into a frenzy.

Moments later, the Bold's elated energy would dissipate into thin air with the Ridgebacks sucking all the life from the home crowd with a pair of clutch shots to cap off a wild final minute of play.

"I don't think we lost the game in that possession, we lost the game in the first half when we decided we were not competing," said Head Coach of the Bold David DeAveiro following the loss. TMU trailed by two points by the end of the first and second quarter respectively against the Ridgebacks on Saturday.

Four different Ridgebacks landed triples in the first quarter to help their squad climb into the driver's seat against the Bold, while Aaron Rhooms posted a team-leading nine points in his first ten minutes of play.

TMU were finally able to close the scoring gap with Ontario Tech in the late stages of the second quarter, with Gabriel Gutsmore and Marsei Caston explosively trading dunks in a 34-second span to instill some much-needed energy into the home bench.

"When I get in I gotta get straight to it and bring the energy," mentioned Caston following the game.

TMU's Simon Chamberlain lent a helping hand in restricting Bold's deficit at halftime as well, draining a pair of three's and mixing in an assist to bring his side within two as they marched to the locker room.

Despite the Ridgebacks continuing to burrade the Bold with points from beyond the arc, TMU found their groove from within their opposition's paint to help settle the storm. Among those finding offensive success was Caston, recording another dramatic dunk to compliment his nine-point quarter and help his team continue to cut into Ontario Tech's lead.

With triples becoming a luxury in the fourth quarter, both side's opted to attack In and around the glass throughout the final moments of Saturday's matinee affair. A late dunk from Rhooms brought the Bold within just a single point of the Ridgebacks until chaos took hold of the match in the final two minutes of play.

By the time the dust settled, the Ridgebacks would regain their lead after momentarily losing it to the Bold, and secure their fifth win of the season. TMU will look to rebound from their heartbreaking defeat on Wednesday when they host the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks at 8:00 p.m.
