Game Recap: Hockey (W) | | Mario Russo

Bold surrender three unanswered in loss to Varsity Blues

The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey squad surrendered three-unanswered goals in a 4-1 defeat to the University of Toronto (UofT) Varsity Blues on Thursday night.

TMU forward Emily Baxter netted the lonesome tally for the Bold in the loss, assuring the tossing of dozens of stuffed teddy bears onto the ice to commemorate the team's annual Teddy Bear Toss night at the MAC.

"The vibe as soon as you get the goal is just awesome," said Abby DeCorby following the game. The fourth-year defender recorded her second assist in as many games on TMU's memorable tally.

"It was nice to get the goal for the toss today," she added.

The city rivals traded goals in just a 24-second span during the early goings of the first period.

In almost identical fashion to her goal against the Western Mustangs on Saturday, Baxter would kickstart TMU's scoring on the penalty kill to bring Thursday's contest back to level terms. Her shorthanded success over the last week has elevated the Bold to third in the OUA in short-handed goal support, trailing just the York Lions in that category.

"The 'P.K' is definitely something that we can use for momentum. Getting that [shorthanded goal] was huge for us," mentioned DeCorby. Head Coach of the Bold Lisa Haley believes the shorthanded marker has stood as a huge motivator for the squad this season, with tonight being another prime example of its aftereffect.

The Varsity Blues regained the lead midway through the middle stanza with the help of Taylor Trussler's deflection in front of the TMU goal. The veteran forward has been shooting one of the hottest sticks in the Varsity Blues' lineup recently, registering points in three of her last four games.

Trussler added another tally to her nightly total in the third period as well, picking up a secondary assist to help double UofT's lead over the Bold. Heavily outchancing the blue and gold, It would only take a couple of minutes for the Varsity Blues to tack on their fourth of the evening and put the game further out of the reach of the home side.

"I think we let off for about three or four minutes in the third and [UofT] capitalized," added DeCorby.

The Bold combined for six penalty minutes in the late stages of Thursday's cross-city affair. Despite being able to kill off both of their penalized infractions, the group ran out of time at 5-on-5 in the third and fell to the Varsity Blues for an eighth consecutive loss.

"It's kind of crazy how we can string together some really solid minutes and at other times, get away from our game plan," added Haley amidst her group's longest losing skid of the season.

Her group will look to find a win in one of their three road matches before the conclusion of the fall semester. Their first chance at doing so will arrive this upcoming Saturday when the Bold face off against the York Lions. Puck drop is set for 7:15 p.m.
