Gallagher nets teddy bear toss goal, Bold lose to Toronto neighbours

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University Bold men's hockey team took on the visitors from down the subway line, the Toronto Varsity Blues, in their annual Teddy Bear Toss game on Wednesday night.

The Varsity Blues opened the game with a shot on goal at Kai Edmonds but he was quick with the save. In a very back and forth first period, the visiting Blues scored a goal in the 16th minute of the game. With more shots on goal, the Bold were looking for the perfect opportunity to even it out.

"It gets a little chippy every time we play UofT but I thought all and all we did some really good things in the second period and for whatever reason we were just really flat there in the third," said head coach Johnny Duco.

A power play awarded to the Bold was left scoreless, followed by a flick from Joe Rupoli that was saved by the Varsity Blues goalie. The first period ended at a one-goal deficit for the home team.

In the opening minutes of the second, Ian Martin took a shot at the Varsity Blues, but he couldn't find the back of the net. Edmonds saved another attempted goal from the visitors.

The crowd launched the teddy bears on the ice when Carson Gallagher's goal landed in the neighbouring teams goal to even out the score.

"It was great. I guess that was my third teddy bear toss goal. I love scoring on these nights," said Gallagher.

With under three minutes left to go in the second period, Aleks Dimovski was taken off the ice after an altercation with a Varsity Blues player resulted in his blood on the ice. The referees decided not to call a power play for the incident.

"It was certainly frustrating. We were confused as to how that all transpired but at the end of the day you can't control the officiating. Yeah, it was a tough one for sure," added the head coach.

Immediately after, Roberts took a penalty at the end of the period for high sticking, giving the Varsity Blues a power play.

"Obviously, [Dimovski] did get hit and he came back to the bench, we knew he got hit and then I did hit Wong. I think it was an opportunity where both should've been called but that's just the way the game goes," said Roberts.

The Bold had a number of great chances at goal, but halfway through the third period it was the Varsity Blues who snuck the puck in, once again leading the home team by one goal.

With under a minute left in the game, Edmonds was pulled from the goal and the Varsity Blues seized the opportunity to score a final goal.

"I didn't love our game…I just think collectively top down, I think there was a couple of goals we'd like to have back, a couple soft plays in our D-zone and not enough execution or effort from our forward group so you know, at the end of the 60 minutes, we got what we deserved," added Duco.

The Bold ended their teddy bear toss game in a loss, their first on home ice of the season. There's still more to come for the Bold as they gear up for the second half of the season and hosting nationals.

"Oh it was great! I hope more fans come out," said Gallagher. I think we're starting to get more [fans] and we have a good record, we've been playing really well and we have a good team. It'll obviously be busy in March for nationals but the more fans we get out to these games, the better it is for us," added the lone goalscorer.

The Bold are back in action on Friday when they visit the division leading Brock Badgers.
