Bold beat McMaster in thriller

HAMILTON, Ont. - The TMU Bold women's basketball team beat McMaster 71-68 on Wednesday in Hamilton. It was the Bold's second win over the second place Marauders, who are now 5-2 on the season. The Bold now hold a two game lead in the OUA's Central division at 7-0.

It was a frantic start to the contest with McMaster building an early lead off shots from the perimeter, while the Bold generated their offence inside the paint. Catrina Garvey was impactful in the game's opening moments, helping the Bold keep pace with a hot-shooting Marauders attack. A Corrynn Parker three would give the Bold their first lead of the game with 28 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, giving them a 18-17 advantage into the break.

The Bold began the second quarter by outscoring the Marauders 10-1 through the first four minutes of the quarter. The Bold lead had stretched to ten at one point, but another hot shooting spree by McMaster kept the Marauders in the game. A timeout seemed to reset things for the Bold, as they were able to take a 32-28 lead into the half.

McMaster would quickly retake the lead in the second half, coming out of the break playing swarming defence. From there the teams would trade the lead, with each shot seemingly putting either team back in front. A big block by Haley Fedick provided the Bold with a defensive boost, beginning a run of consecutive TMU stops. The Bold were unable to capitalize on their strong defensive play, however, with the Marauders' defence equally up to the task. Alex Pino would inspire the Bold offence coming off the bench, finding open shooters and converting tough takes. Her efforts would help the Bold carry a 51-49 lead into the final ten minutes.

The Bold would once again allow a quarter-opening McMaster run, with the Marauders more efficient on the offensive end. The Bold struggled shooting the ball to begin the final frame and McMaster capitalized, holding a 58-55 lead with 5:55 to go. Jayme Foreman continued her clutch run of play, helping the Bold respond as McMaster looked to clinch an important victory over TMU.

A massive Garvey three with two minutes to play put the Bold down one. On the following possession, Foreman would put the Bold back in front with another clutch three-pointer. After McMaster free throws brought the score even, a McMaster foul put Foreman on the line for three shots. Number 10 for the Bold hit all three, putting the Bold two defensive stops away from victory. A McMaster shot rimmed in and out on the Bold's first defensive stand, before Haley Franco-DeRyck stripped the ball away from McMaster as time expired, clinching a dramatic Bold victory.

The Bold continue their season on Saturday against Ontario Tech, before finishing the first half of their season against Laurier and Waterloo next week.
