Bold ride strong defensive second half to victory

HAMILTON, Ont. - The TMU Bold men's basketball team earned a hard-fought 81-68 victory over the McMaster Marauders on Wednesday night in Hamilton. The win, the Bold's second over the Marauders this season, moves TMU to 5-2 on the year. Perhaps more importantly, however, the win moves the Bold above the Marauders in the OUA's Central division as the season nears the winter break.

The Bold found themselves up early in the contest, with Lincoln Rosebush and Aaron Rhooms working in tandem effectively to build the TMU lead. Despite comfortably controlling the game the Bold were unable to run away with the game as McMaster found second chance opportunities and drew several charges on defence, stealing possessions. As a result, McMaster was able to keep things close, taking a brief lead before the end of the first quarter. TMU would grab the lead back, with a Gabriel Gutsmore slam putting the finishing touches on a 23-18 TMU first quarter.

Great ball movement helped the Bold find a rhythm in the second. A beautiful passing display saw Simon Chamberlain find Gutsmore for a wide-open three, pushing the Bold lead to nine. However, the Marauders found shooting success from beyond the arc, quickly orchestrating an 8-0 run halfway through the second quarter. McMaster would take the lead with a third consecutive three-pointer, shocking the Bold with 11 straight points. The teams would trade points, with Julian Walker and Rhooms driving the Bold offence for stretches. The Bold would enter the break with a three point lead after a clutch Rhooms fade-away three at the buzzer put them ahead.

The teams began the second half slow out of the gate, with both sides failing to connect on passes in transition and struggling to sink shots. Aaron Rhooms continued to push the Bold offence, willing shots to drop as the Bold struggled. The TMU defence made up for their offensive inefficiency, swarming Marauders when the ball entered the paint. This saw the Bold slowly grow their lead throughout the quarter. Marsei Caston cut effectively to the net, helping TMU stretch its lead to eight as the quarter ended, 63-55.

In the fourth, McMaster looked to complete its third consecutive fourth quarter comeback. In the early stages of the quarter the Bold struggled to hit shots, opening the door for the Marauders. McMaster also struggled to shoot the ball, helping bring TMU close to victory with each passing possession. McMaster would cut the lead to six with four minutes to go, before the Bold offence would awaken once more, converting on back to back trips for the first time in the quarter. A mini-run by the Bold would slice through the McMaster full-court press, helping them build their lead and ice their fifth victory of the season.

The Bold take on Ontario Tech from the MAC on Saturday before finishing the first half of their season against Laurier and Waterloo next week.
