Battle between Bold and Golden Hawks ends in tough loss

WATERLOO, Ont. 0 The TMU Bold men's hockey team ended their six-game road trip Thursday night in Waterloo as they hit the ice, hoping to beat the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Last week's player of the game Aaron Hyman, was quickly on the hunt for a goal. He began this game one point away from matching his career-high of 11 points.

Right away the Bold secured many scoring chances in the first period. After a quiet first period overall, the team came back in the second ready to break through the Golden Hawks' back line.

Entering the game, Kyle Bollers had recorded 11 points in his last seven games, and continued to be a threat on the ice.

Many faulty passes by the Golden Hawks gave the Bold the chance to get the puck to the goal line. Shots in the first were 15 to five for the Bold but Golden Hawks goalie Christian Propp made it challenging for the Bold to get the puck past him.

Early in the second period, the Golden Hawks scored the first goal of the night but Bold goalie Kai Edmonds rebounded well, shutting down any more shots in the period. The Bold used their power play opportunities to cycle in the Golden Hawks zone but it didn't lead to a goal.

By the end of the night the Bold had 46 shots on goal. Liam Ross got very close to tying up the game in the second, but the Golden Hawks goalie was a wall to be reckoned with.

A quick breakthrough by the Golden Hawks gave them their second goal of the night, extending the lead and the Bold were looking for any way to get a goal on the board.

The history between the Bold and the Golden Hawks added to tonight's pressure. The Bold had not beaten Laurier in the last five games, dating back to January 2020.

A close call for Daniil Grigourev came in the third period as he hit the crossbar, one of many shots on the night from him. The Bold put in the effort chasing the puck and taking every shot possible in the last ten minutes of the third.

Assistant captain Connor Bowie received a stretch pass from Cole Cameron as he rushed towards the Golden Hawks net and scored, making this a one-goal game with about six minutes left to play.

The Bold did everything they could to keep this game within reach, but there was enough time for the Golden Hawks to score two empty netters. It was a tough battle against the Golden Hawks and their goalie, but the Bold are back on the ice this weekend.

The Bold take on the York Lions this Saturday at 2:15 p.m. on home ice at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
