Game Recap: Basketball (W) | | Mario Russo

Garvey plays hero to keep Bold unbeaten against UofT

In their closest contest of the regular season, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball squad kept their perfect season alive in a hard-fought 81-79 victory over the University of Toronto (UofT) Varsity Blues on Saturday.

First-year Catrina Garvey rattled her team's winning shot around the Varsity Blues' rim with just 50 seconds remaining in the afternoon affair to secure the triumphant win.

"I am naturally a really-poised person. To me, I knew time was running out and I saw the shot. It was just second-nature for me," said Garvey following the win.

A hot start greeted both the Bold and Varsity Blues in the opening quarter of Saturday's rivalry affair. The two teams combined for 45 points through the first ten minutes of play, a feat the two sides were unable to sniff at in TMU's 66-47 win over the Varsity Blues on Wednesday.

Kaillie Hall came out of the high-scoring frame leading the Bold in points (10) just three days removed from setting her season-high in the same category with 18. The fourth-year's production would be complimented by the hot offense of first-years Garvey and Corrynn Parker, both of which chipping in six and five points respectively over the course of the first quarter.

Parker continued her scorching start to Saturday's game with another pair of baskets before the halftime buzzer. Her early dominance would be highlighted by a stretch of successful layups coming in the span of eight seconds to give the Bold their first lead of the second quarter.

"[Parker] impacts the game in a lot of different ways. Love to see her make some plays defensively and turn it into offense," added head coach of the Bold Carly Clarke

Much of UofT's undoing in the tightly-played opening half struck a similar chord to what went wrong for the Varsity Blues in their loss to the Bold earlier in the week. TMU were able to score over a third of their points on Wednesday from the free-throw line as a result of their opposition's multitude of fouls within their own paint.

By halftime, the Bold snatched points on 11 of their 14 free-throw attempts, nine of which coming in the middle frame that swung much of the game's momentum in TMU's favour.

UofT's Raya Hafez helped compensate for her team's disciplinary flaws to open up the third quarter, scoring seven consecutive points to slash the Bold's lead to just a single point.

From that point forward, the two sides swapped places in a limited-possession game that witnessed their lucrative leads evaporate in a matter of seconds. Parker managed to steady the rocking ship in the dwindling seconds of the third quarter with a strong layup to tie the Varsity Blues heading into a pivotal fourth and final frame.

Yet just as she did to power the Bold towards a second-quarter lead, Parker's last-second layup in the third would light a fire under TMU's offense and spark dominant performances from all around the floor.

Jayme Foreman went perfect from the free-throw line to bridge a gap between her side and the chasing Varsity Blues. Later in the frame, Hall would add her 24th point of the afternoon on a dramatic corner-three to fire the Bold in front of their rivals by nine.

"[Hall] found her moments today and shot the ball confidently," added Clarke.

With the score back to level terms in the final minute seconds of Saturday's contest, Garvey would land a heroic jumper from just inside the three-point line to triumphantly keep TMU's perfect season alive.

The Bold will look to make it seven wins to start the season on Wednesday when they face off against the McMaster Marauders. Tip off from McMaster is set for 6:00 p.m.
