Gareau nets first Bold power play goal but Lakers sweep weekend series

TORONTO - The TMU Bold women's hockey team took on the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday afternoon for the second time this weekend, hoping for a comeback after the loss yesterday.

As expected, goalie Lauren Griffin was back in the net, holding their team's game in hand. Griffin has a save percentage of .929% and has played in all but one game this season.

"They have gained a lot of confidence and we have a lot of confidence in them, so the decision was easy," said head coach Lisa Haley, on the decision to start Griffin in net.

The Lakers have been consistent in their play, but the Bold knew they had to change tactics to take the lead and keep the shots close.

"We just want to focus on the game plan and try to execute, and sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn't," added Haley.

The Bold were aggressive on the forecheck, but the Lakers defence was consistently tight around the net.

Captain Emily Baxter sits second in the OUA league in goals with a total of five. Baxter constantly puts the puck towards the net, and so far that has worked out well for her and the Bold.

"It's about working together with my linemates and a lot of the time it's being in the right place at the right time," Baxted commented.

Nearing the end of the first period, the Bold really showed a shift in energy compared to last night. Today it was all about shutting down any scoring chances and pushing the puck up towards the Lakers zone.

The Bold came into the second on the attack and finally, they overtook in shots on goal, but a pass to the Lakers in front of the net gave them the first goal of the game.

In net, Griffin holds down the net to their best ability, but another shot goes right over them and gives the Lakers the 2-0 lead.

A penalty in the final minutes of the second period gave the Bold a power play and Gaby Gareau took the advantage and shot a rocket to the Lakers net. Gareau scored the first power play goal of the season and the bench was electric.

"I think everybody got a spark of energy there, and it being our first power play goal definitely brought up the confidence of the team," added Gareau.

Gareau's goal came after a lot of extra practice with her linemate Mia Morano, and since two on ones in hockey don't come often, they capitalized on that.

The third period was all about going as hard as possible to keep the Lakers score in reach, but a few mistakes allowed another two goals for Nipissing.

In the end, the Lakers took the win 4-1 and the Bold are going back to the basics, focusing on making fewer mistakes and opening more opportunities for a goal.

The Bold next face the Brock Badgers next Friday in St. Catharines at 12:00 p.m.
