Tough loss for Bold as Gryphons leave with upper hand

TORONTO - Coming off an incredible win on Friday night, the TMU Bold women's hockey team was fired up and ready to take down one of their biggest competitors, the Guelph Gryphons.

Starting off the Bold were on the defensive, and just like their penalty kill on Friday, an early PK proved the Bold's ability to keep the Gryphons out of their net.

"The PK has been good and given us a lot of momentum," said head coach Lisa Haley after the game.

Lauren Griffin was immediately in the zone as they blocked most of the scoring chances the Gryphons had, but the visitors ultimately managed to squeeze one through.

The Bold spent the first period fighting hard in their zone, trying to compete against the third-ranked team in the west division, who followed with a late goal in the first.

The Gryphons have a tight team and play a complete game, and after speaking with Lisa Haley yesterday, this is a game the Bold were looking forward to a challenge.

Gaby Gareau scored six minutes into the second period, closing the gap between the Bold and the Gryphons. She's been on a roll all season long racking up four assists and one goal.

"Coming into the regular season we were able to figure out what worked well, and I think I work really well with my line and that's where a majority of the points come from," added Gareau.

Griffin played another strong game in the net, saving 28 shots and keeping this a close game.

Facing the Gryphons who are very strong offensively, Griffin played a big role in today's game.

"Yesterday I felt like we put a good game together, but today was a different story, we made a couple of mistakes," added coach Haley. The team is striving to work on their defence and sending the puck up the ice to open more goal scoring chances.

Following the loss, the team looks forward to a doubleheader against the Queen's Gaels on November 4th and 5th in Kingston.
