Game Recap: Hockey (W) | | Zaina Razek

Home opener hype leads to impressive shutout performance

TORONTO - The TMU Bold women's hockey team had their home opener on Friday night, facing the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. Entering with a record of 0-3, the Bold were looking to break that streak and come out with a win and they did.

An electric start to the game was all the Bold needed to push through the home opener and get their first shutout of the season.

The last few games have been tough, but tonight was not like the others. "I think every game has got a different story, but I felt like we put all the pieces together tonight and took advantage of it as a team," said head coach, Lisa Haley.

A diving pass from the corner gave captain Emily Baxter the puck and she found the net right over the Ridgebacks goalie's glove, opening the scoring for the Bold just four minutes into the game.

Baxter then put up back-to-back shots hoping to give the Bold more of a lead, and in the meantime, the Bold defence did a great job of keeping the puck out of their zone and sending it up the ice.

Power play opportunities for the Ridgebacks turned the pressure on for the Bold, but starting goalie Lauren Griffin shut down any shots from the Ridgebacks, tallying up 24 saves by the end of the night.

"We've been slowly moving upwards as a team, and we felt that need to lay it all out there. Sure it was 24 saves but it was a team effort," said Griffin.

After an amazing performance, the team awarded Griffin the player of the game.

Baxter scored her third of the season and second of the game in the second period, pulling this game to 2-0 in the Bold's favour.

Baxter, who was named captain this year, has felt great pressure to be a good leader. "This is definitely a great honour and I've had some great captains before me, so I'm just making sure that I can be the person that the team looks up to," said Baxter.

The Bold came back each period looking better than ever, hungry for another goal, and a five-on-three penalty kill was the star of tonight's game. The Bold made it impossible for the Ridgebacks to score and all their PK practice has paid off.

The success continued, as Megan Bergamanis scored a beautiful shot off the crossbar nine minutes into the third. She officially recorded her first goal as a TMU Bold player.

A hooking call late in the third period led to a penalty shot for the Bold, and for Mia Morano, the pressure was on. A quick shot found the top corner of the net, giving the Bold a 4-0 lead and Morano her first of the season.

With minutes left to go and a victory in sight, the Bold held stronger, sending the Ridgebacks home with a loss. As for the Bold, breaking their losing streak was the highlight of the night.

Looking forward, the Bold are hoping to clean up the little mistakes made along the way. "Just some little tweaks that we need to do, so we can get the puck in their zone," added Baxter.

The Bold take on the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, with Haley adding, "Hopefully we can continue to build on this mentality tomorrow against a really tough team."

The puck drops against the Gryphons at 2:15 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
