Bold score twice in third but fall to Windsor

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team got the wheels turning for an away matchup against the Windsor Lancers but were unable to claim the victory.

The team played their first game after lead assistant coach and retired Team Canada women's hockey player Hayley Irwin announced she would be leaving the team and continuing her coaching journey in Ottawa with the PWHL.

Irwin has been part of the Bold's coaching staff since 2019.

It was a tough first period for the Bold, as the Lancers Maggi DeWolf-Russ took an early lead at home, scoring seven minutes in.

Bold goalie, Shannon Harris, worked hard to make some great saves which ended the first 20-minute period in a 1-0 lead for the Lancers.

The beginning of the second period started off well for the Bold, taking multiple shots on goal.

Defender Megan Breen had a shot on goal that was saved by the Lancers goalie, followed by a Lancers quick turnover speeding to the Bold goal but the shot was off target.

The puck shuffled between the two teams, making it hard for either one to fully take possession.

A scoreless second period dawned in Windsor and the Bold knew they had to step up their game in the third.

In the opening minutes of the final period, Breen took a shot which slid seamlessly into the Lancers goal.

After celebrating an even score, the Bold's emotions were quickly overturned when the Lancers scored two more goals in the last period, putting them in a lead over the visitors.

The Bold struggled to fight back, but were eager to score at least one more goal in Windsor.

With less than a minute left, the Lancers took aim at a Bold empty net, but much to their dismay, the puck went off the post.

A quick timeout allowed the Bold to reassess their strategy and something big was on the way.

Second-year Ahalya Julien-Medeiros scored the last goal of the game with less than a minute left. Her efforts were much needed, but the team couldn't secure a third goal, leaving them with a loss at the hands of the Lancers.

With this being the team's third straight loss this season, it isn't the outcome they were hoping for.

The team will play their home opener against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on October 27, and look to secure a win with the community supporting them in the seats of Mattamy Home Ice. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
