Bold fall to Mustangs in second game of the season

LONDON, Ont. - The TMU Bold women's hockey team fell to the Western Mustangs by a score of 4-1 on Friday night in London. The Bold held a lead after 20 minutes, but multiple scoring chances and four goals in the second allowed Western to build a lead they would not relinquish. The loss puts TMU at 0-2-0 on the young season.

It was a fast moving opening frame with few whistles and a consistent pressure generated by Western. Lauren Griffin was incredible in the first period continuing their dominance over Western from last year when they recorded one shutout and two wins in two starts against the Mustangs. They made 23 saves in tonight's loss but none of the 23 were better than an incredible pad save with 12:33 to go in the first, keeping the game scoreless. The Bold would reward Griffin's strong play with a goal from Neely Van Volsen. It was an impressive solo effort that saw her stealing the puck and going coast-to-coast before beating Western's backstop blocker side. Van Volsen's first career goal gave TMU a lead heading into the break, a positive result after a period in which play was consistently inside the Bold's zone.

Their lead would be short lived in the second, however, as a rebound goal 1:15 into the frame evened the score. Matters would be made worse soon after, as Western would quickly add a second goal following a defensive zone turnover. A third Western goal would follow, on a breakaway to push their lead to 3-1. Within 9:26 Western had built a two goal cushion after entering the period down one. It was a similar position to what the Bold faced last week in their loss to Nipissing where they held the lead after the first, but quickly gave it away in the second.

A misplayed puck on a TMU power play led to another Western goal, representative of the TMU second period. The Bold constantly had opportunities to get back into the game, with multiple power plays in the second. TMU allowed several breakaways on the man advantage, giving the Mustangs prime shorthanded scoring opportunities. Defensive zone turnovers also prolonged Western offensive chances, catching tired TMU defenders on the ice for extended stretches throughout the period. At the conclusion of the second the Bold were down 4-1, with little momentum generated.

They entered the third looking for a response. They would weather the storm early on which opened a back and forth beginning to the frame in which TMU was able to establish prolonged offensive zone time, and limit dangerous Western chances. Shots from the Mustangs in the third were largely from distance and rushes were disrupted before they posed a real threat.

On the offensive side TMU would not be able to find the back of the net in the third. Western remained solid defensively, playing responsible, risk free defence with a four goal lead. The Bold's best chances would come late in the third on a power play but would ultimately fail to capitalize. To begin the campaign the power play has yet to convert, currently sitting at 0-for-9 on the season. Finishing 0-for-6 tonight helped Western hold on for a 4-1 final.

The Bold travel to Windsor on Saturday looking for their first win of the year against the Lancers, before returning home next week for their home opener against Ontario Tech from the MAC on Friday.
