Gryphons snap Bold winning streak

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team fell 2-1 to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in their annual Do it for Daron (DIFD) game.

The impact of today's game goes beyond the final score as the Bold were celebrating their eighth annual DIFD game to raise awareness for youth mental health in memory of Daron Richardson. The initiative was brought to TMU by Emma Rutherford and Cassie Sharp, two TMU women's hockey alumnae who played minor hockey with Richardson.

Richardson, the daughter of former NHL player Luke Richardson, passed away on Nov. 13, 2010, after committing suicide in their family home.

"This is a game that is always circled on our calendar, it means a lot to us and our program," said Bold head coach Lisa Haley. "This is a real important issue in our society and it's important for us to raise awareness for youth mental health."

"So many people put in so much work into this game. It was an honour to play it as a first-year," added Bold netminder Alexia Stratos

In the game, the Bold's four-game winning streak from before the holiday layover was snapped with the loss. The Gryphons took the lead from two late second period goals from Rylee Davison and Brielle Caruso, respectively.

Following that, Bold forward Erika Crouse put one past Gryphons netminder Martina Fedel to cut the deficit in half with one minute remaining. However, Guelph was able to hold on in the third for the victory.

"Guelph is a real difficult team, especially defensively," said coach Haley. "They protect the middle of the ice really well, I don't think we were able to find much east-to-west room out there, especially in the neutral zone."

In the middle frame, the Gryphons' offence came alive with several odd-man rushes, however, Stratos made numerous crucial saves to keep TMU within striking distance.

"Our goaltending was outstanding. I thought Stratos gave us a chance every step of the way," Haley added. "I know she's focused on tracking and angles and I thought she was exceptional there. [She] made a lot of really tough first saves."

"It was a back-and-forth game and it was really close, as are all the games in this league, but I saw the puck well today, so that was good," said Stratos, sporting the team's player of the game helmet.

On the other end, Fedel had many key saves of her own to protect the Guelph one-goal lead in the third, including a sliding pad save on Crouse late in the third.

"I think she got them the three points," said Haley. "Both goaltenders were probably the best players on each team. I think it's exciting, but for us, we would have liked to get a few more by her."

The Bold now look to put themselves back in the win column on Thursday as they head up to Canlan Ice Sports in a subway series matchup against the York Lions.

"Games in the second half are tough, it's going to be gritty. The compete level has another level to get to," said Haley. "I think our team understands that there are 12 games left and every point matters and the fight to get those points is going to be a little bit tougher than it had been so far this season."

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
