Four unanswered goals lift Bold to win over Mustangs

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan Bold (TMU) Bold men's hockey team kicked off the new year with a bang, making easy work of the visiting Western Mustangs in their 4-1 win.

Kevin Gursoy and Ryan Wells opened the floodgates for TMU with a pair of power play tallies. Aleks Dimovski added a third dent to the scoreboard before Jesse Barwell slid the dagger in the wide-open Western cage to seal the deal for the Bold.

"Offensively, it was the tip of the iceberg tonight," said head coach of the Bold, Johnny Duco

The first contest of 2023 did not open up the way TMU goaltender Kai Edmonds would have liked, with the club in front of him trailing by one and off the heels of the rookie's own undoings early on.

Streaking down the left side, Western defenceman Reed Morison fired a shot from well below the hash marks that seemed unthreatening as it inched closer towards the Bold goal. The shot would deflect off the glove of Edmonds and trickle into the back of the net to uncharacteristically put the Bold behind the eight ball early on.

"After that it was time to dial in and make sure I don't give up another one," said Edmonds who admitted to having a "brain fart" on the defensive miscue.

Coming up with an adequate response, Gursoy quickly leveled the game up for the home side by uncorking a rocket just outside the mouth of the Mustangs goal.

The power play marker would be an historic one for newly acquired Daniel D'Amico, however, who in his first official game with the club, picked up his initial point of the program.

"He's a proven winner, he's a proven scorer… we're really thrilled to have him here in our program," said Duco on his novel forward.

Wells and the Bold doubled their score midway through the second and on the man-advantage nonetheless, suffocating any breath of momentum the Mustangs may have had.

The second-year defender mightily stepped into his first look on the power play to unleash a blue-line blast that slammed the back of the Western cage. The Bold's bench boss referred to the goal from his stewart defender as "an absolute snipe" that helped pave the way towards the win.

His go-ahead goal would also strike a similar chord to his third-period tally from last spring that enthusiastically brought the group level with the Mustangs in the first round of the postseason.

On the other side of the freshly painted Bold ice, Edmonds continued to demonstrate not only his outlier strength between the pipes, but rather his composure and collectedness between the ears.

Steering aside all seven of Western's looks in the second, as well as pitching an impenetrable wall throughout the final frame, Edmonds effectively took control of the game and drove the outing home for the Bold.

"We've become very accustomed to him being a rock star back there for us," said Duco following his goaltender's league-leading 11th win of the season.

"I just had to do my job and shut the door," added Edmonds.

The Bold will look to keep it rolling this upcoming Saturday when they face off against the Brock Badgers. Puck drop from Canada Games Park is set for 4:00.
