Badgers spoil school day atmosphere, defeat Bold 4-2

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey squad went blow for blow with the visiting Brock Badgers earlier today, but fell just short of the mark in a 4-2 loss.

Forward Madison Cronkwright sealed the deal for the Badgers late in the third frame, tucking in the empty netter to cap off Brock's eighth win of the season.

"Everybody's gotta be on the bus. If you just miss one stop that's the difference," said head coach of the Bold, Lisa Haley. "It's tough to have another close loss," she added.

Breathless back and forth action greeted the Badgers and the Bold to open up this year's school-day game at the Mattamy Athletic Centre as both sides traded goals early in the contest's initial frame.

The visitors silenced the home crowd just nine seconds into the Friday morning affair, with Catriona Cormier netting the opening tally on just the first shot of the match to quickly put her side a goal to the good.

Less than ten minutes later, however, the Bold would muster up a fierce response as Brooke Michaud leveled up the scoring at one apiece.

"I thought she had a really solid role to play today and she stepped up and did that for us," praised TMU's bench boss.

The energy from the opening frame would spill into the second stanza as well, with both sides trading punches throughout the entirety of the period.

TMU found themselves in penalty trouble in the opening stages of the second, making their way to the box on three consecutive plays to hand the Badgers the early edge in personnel.

The visitors would turn that advantage into one that showed on the scoresheet as well, with defender Paige Cohoon capitalizing on her group's third and final power play of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.

The penalties served as what Haley described as  "a big momentum breaker," coining the power play goal as the pivotal difference maker in the match.

With the penalty parade continuing to possess the penultimate period of the match, Erika Crouse and the Bold would similarly register a tally with the extra attacker to bring the score back to level.

TMU forward Emily Baxter would send a lively feed to a wide-open Crouse who wasted no time in burying her team-leading ninth goal of the season to reignite some life back into the home crowd.

"There's a reason why she scores all those goals… it's a natural thing for her," said Haley.

The blue and gold continued to play with pace and tempo throughout the remainder of the frame, but would surrender a third go-ahead tally from the Badgers in the dying minutes of the period.

The extra pep in the Bold's step encapsulated the entirety of the third period and set up a wild finish for the school-day crowd to endure.

Megan Breen grasped the bulk of the dangerous looks for TMU, failing to find the twine on consecutive open looks from the side of the goal to miraculously keep the Badgers ahead by one.

With the home crowd behind them, the Bold pushed the Badgers to their breaking point, however the visitors failed to surrender and came away with a crucial set of points on the road.

The Bold will quickly jump on the bus and head to Western where their Saturday afternoon affair readily awaits. Crouse believes the team's response will be something to look out for: "We just gotta bounce back."

Puck drop is set for 4:00.
