Bold defence shines in second half en route to win over Windsor

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) women's basketball squad got the better of the visiting Windsor Lancers earlier this evening, beating the OUA West side by a 70-63 score.

Kaillie Hall led the way for the home side on the attack, lobbing in a pair of three's en route to her team-leading 16 points in the victory.

"I think there is composure and trust in our plan right now and I think we're seeing that in action," said head coach of the Bold, Carly Clarke.

An unprecedented flurry of attacks greeted the Bold and Lancers in their Friday night affair as both defensive juggernauts would combine for 41 points in the opening ten minutes of play.

TMU's Hall and Windsor's Hariett Carey highlighted the game's initial frame by leaving their marks from beyond the arc. The two guards traded a pair of blows from distance to break the game open for each of their sides, with Carey netting her end of the bargain on consecutive Lancer drives.

Both sides continued to play out the opening quarter getting increasingly more comfortable with the punch-for-punch narrative of the match. In the dying seconds of the frame, former Lancer Eve Uwayesu secured a second-quarter lead for the blue and gold by netting a crucial trio of points to cap off a wild period of play for the home side.

"She was super composed for us," praised Hall, crediting her teammate's veteran leadership as a feature that "made everyone else on the floor feel comfortable."

"Everyone felt that composure down the stretch," added Clarke.

In a similar stance to the first, both Windsor and TMU continued to play into the back-and-forth narrative that encapsulated all of the action in the quarter's predecessor.

The Bold highlighted the attack with a nine-point run that saw the group start from a point behind, and end with a two-possession advantage.

Haley Fedick and Tiya Misir took control of TMU's run of play midway through the frame, with the latter netting her sixth point of the night while falling towards the hardwood.

"She can create a shot for herself…people have confidence in her," said Clarke.

Scoring streaks would spill into the third quarter as well, with the Lancers taking full control of their 11-point run in an enthusiastic way. The visitors would net a trio of threes, all flying from the hands of different players dressed in dark blue.

Maggie Deny dealt much of the blow during her side's pivotal stretch of play, complementing her long three with a pair of free throws. Deny's rapid efficiency would be met by Rachel Farwell later in the frame, as the fourth-year forward pieced together a pair of late three's to dig the home side out of their elongated deficit.

Trailing by a pair of possessions heading into the fourth and final frame, TMU matched their third-quarter score to help narrow in on their third consecutive home win over the Lancers.

Hall continued to scorch the width of the court, netting six of her ten points while playing an integral role in the Bold's ability to come from behind and cruise to a seven-point win.

The team will look to generate some more momentum tomorrow afternoon when they play host to the Western Mustangs. Tip off is set for 4:00.
