TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball team battled in the fourth quarter to force overtime but ultimately fell 97-95 in extra time to the Windsor Lancers on Friday night.
With just 1.6 seconds remaining in the contest, Najee Brown-Henderson went to the free-throw line for the Lancers to try and take the lead. However, with the Bold crowd rising to the occasion, the Windsor, Ont. product went just one of three from the stripe to send the game to overtime.
However, in overtime, Brown-Henderson was able to redeem himself, as his buzzer-beating lay-in allowed the Lancers to come in to the MAC and pick up the win over the Bold.
Henderson-Brown had a game-high 28 points in the win, while Thomas Kennedy — who has starred for the Canadian Men's National Team — chipped in 22 points and nine rebounds for the Lancers.
There were some positives to take away for TMU, despite the loss — including 23 points from David Walker, with nine of the 23 coming in the final quarter.
Paced by Walker, the Bold rallied back and outscored the Lancers 27-19 in the fourth, to eventually force the extra time. Trailing by six with just 1:38 remaining, a bucket by Aaron Rooms, followed by a pair of Lamar Everd free throws and eventually a dunk from David Walker send the Toronto crowd into bedlam and the game into a deadlock at 79 apiece.Â
But TMU wasn't quite able to ride the momentum and close out the game in regulation.
A triple from Evers with 1:24 remaining in overtime to give the Bold a three-point lead was eventually answered by Henderson-Brown, before the first-year Lancer stepped up in the clutch with the game-winner.
TMU fell to 10-5 with the loss, while OUA West-leading Windsor moved to 9-5.
The Bold will be back in action in less than 24 hours, as they are set to play host to another OUA West foe in the Western Mustangs tomorrow night.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
